I have done this mod before for my VA7 american console, but I never attempted it on my japanese VA2 because I couldn't find a right document that would walk me through the differences.

Basically, I am following this guide now:
    http://www.gneilson.plus.com/Multi_Region_Mega_2.pdf

Everything is fine and understand the logic behind the switches, the problem is that the document assumes the jumpers are in this order:

    JP1
    JP2
    JP3
    JP4

While in my motherboard, they are like

    JP3
    JP4
    JP2
    JP1

    as shown in this picture:

So, how do I figure out which pins to connect to my switches? I can't figure out what's 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 or 8 on the document.
Anybody performed these mods on the same revision of motherboard with the same jumper order?

    Thanks.

The jumpers are the same regardless of what order they're in.

If you see the docs I linked to, you realize that with the jumpers in different order I don't really can tell which points go to which leg of teh switch.

There's always one pin left out. In my layout, which would it be? It isn't clear. Also which ones go in the middle? As both jumpers are put very differently... It's not like it's JP4->JP1, it's all mixed up.

I would apreciate some help with someone who has applied this mod to a similar motherboard.

The pics you provided apply to your system, you need to be looking at it with the jumper markings facing right-side up. You'll see that the left pads of JP1 and JP2 are connected together, as are the left pads for JP3 and JP4. Both of these pairs go to two pins on the VDP, and either grounding them or connecting them to 5V produces different settings. On your system, JP1/2 is grounded while JP3/4 is connected to 5V. This pic should help make things clear:

Right. Language and frequency are largely separate. To do *everything* takes independent in-game control of both.
Some games hide stuff behind their lockout screen (like Japanese text in US version Streets of Rage 2), that switching region at the right time while running can reveal.

It's also true the settings apply for Master System backwards compatible mode.

I'm sorry to bring this thread back from the dead with my first post.

Unlike the example in this picture:
[IMG] (note the lighter green between sets jp2 and jp3)
there are no traces on my va4 japanese md1 beyond the actual white printed lines between the jp points (left to right). I have followed this tutorial: http://mdpal60.net/wiki/megadrive/regionmod/start but the result has been that I start what should be us and japanese settings as both the 60hz/japanese and the pal setting shorts the console.

Help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

umm, what? take a pic of what you've done.

If you haven't cut the tracks, which there HAS to be one of, then by pulling the pin to ground, all you're doing is shorting out the power supply...
