I am making a portable project using the Xbox 1 Console and I was wondering, first is using a Laptop HDD (40GB) a good Idea also should I buy one of those cheap connectors off of ebay or see if I could find a quality one. Mind you it will be running for 4+ hours on Chimps because I do not have a ModChip to put in this xbox. It is already running Evox Softmod on the Origional HDD with Chimps 2.6 installed.
I was thinking about using a laptop hard drive since I have a "spare" 120gb in my laptop. I've decided I like it better there, though. I don't see why there would be much of (if any) difference in adapter. Let us know how it works out.
I've recently put a 160gb laptop drive in my xbox. It has reduced the weight, heat and power consumption of the console. Also, with your portable, saving space will be an important issue. As for a connector, I bought an IDE>Laptop IDE cable from Maplin for £5 and the connector at the laptop end, although tight, seems to break connection with a gentle tap. I'll be replacing it soon with an adaptor which the standard IDE cable plugs into. Hopefully it will be more sturdy than the cable.
You can also think about getting an IDE to CompactFlash adapter... If it's gonna be a portable project, CompactFlash might be favorable (less power consumption, shock proof).
CFs tend to have low space and even lower speeds, unless he's building a firewall. If it's going to play video or even games off of it, then he would want to stick with a regular HDD. But yeh, the laptop drives only use the 5volt for power, so that helps a lot on heat and power consumption and noise (that depends on how old the drive is though). Get an adapter like this, as they are very slim. The ones you find on ebay like this are most likely made by the same manufacturer that this company rebrands into their own name. It's just a pcb with no chips, etc. so it is very simple and a sweatshop can't mess it up. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119245
True, true... but remember that the XBOX originally came with a 10GB hard drive , so a 133x 32 GB might be an improvement over that, and it uses less mA then even a laptop hard drive  . But I agree, for running complete games it might too low in specs.
Also, if you plan on running games, remember that many games write a lot to the disk for caching data, so this would wear down the CF card considerably faster. I'm pretty sure XBMC does this, too, but you can probably turn it off.
Thanks for all of the responce, I plan on to run Evox with some extracted games on it. HDD Specs Ext3 Partition (will be wiped) 40.0GB LBA: 78,140,160 Sectors 5400RPM The Xbox HDD itself is (Seagates website) U Series X : ST310014ACE U Series X Capacity: 10.2 GB Speed: 5400 rpm Average Read Time: 18 ms Cylinders: 16383 Heads: 16 Sectors: 63 So running games shouldent be a speed issue
I installed a laptop HDD under the standard HDD. I just mounted it there and made a toggle between the two so I could have two HDD's and just switch back and forth before boot. This was before the Xtender case but it still looks better stock.
So im going to say this is a green light, I am ordering a Converter now. I found an old 80 instead of a 40. This will be a nice mod.
Yea pics-a-plenty also I finally got a X2VGA so now the hunt is on for a PC flat panel that will work with it.
Thanks, I will look foward to see them! Thanks for the nice shots above already.
Ok KIWIDOGGIE, Nice video, but you got away to go don't you? and what is Evox Softmod? Never heard of it!
Its a Softmod Dashboard (Requires no modchip) called Evolution X, It alows games off of the harddrive, Backuped games. etc.
Thanks KIWIDOGGIE, For the schooling appreciate! The topic sound interesting. Oh by the way do you have your own web site? I think you direct me to one and are you a web specialist? Take care nice gumming with, ya! :icon_bigg
