hellos. Does anyone know if the Laseractive can output audio from videogames via the optical/toslink out? For sure i imagine it can output streamed music from game cds, LDRom2/Mega LD, but are the chip based effects also output, what about from cartridge only software? cheers.
Yes, there is an optical output, you can see here : http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e74186440
Mind the aggro. According to the Wikipedia page on the LaserActive (a potentially unreliable source, I know), it notes that, with the Mega Drive add-on, it was the only Mega Drive to have optical output. Thus, the answer would be yes. I'd assume, therefore, that it would be the same case with the PC Engine module too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_LaserActive#Sega_PAC_.28PAC-S10.2FPAC-S1.29
I don't think MD is capable of true digital audio since both the YM2612 and SN76489 have internal DACs. Same goes for PCE and it's PSG.
Also, it would have to be in PCM if anything, and every Laserdisc player I've ever heard of outputs only AC-3 and DTS.
Laserdisc players do output PCM over digital for pretty much every disk after 1987 or so, well all discs with digital stereo tracks. I only found this out last year after using analogue cables for anything other than DTS/AC-3 movies for a year or so, doh!
