Unfortunately as said above, the Laseractive isn't a vey good Laserdisc player, for sure it's home to some of the best versions of certain titles though.

Laserdisc is a composite format, that's the best you can get, however some of the more expensive players have comb filtered svideo...though its a bit counteracted now in the fact that the comb filter for composite video in modern televisions could be better than the old tech in LD players. Some of the multi region Sony players (MDP) do output RGB via internal conversion.

The scart sockets on PAL players output composite and are just there for the ease of combining sound n vision.

Funny you say that when US made 3DO and Jaguar also look poor. Composite is poor depending on the hardware inside. Nothing to do with the country. Some systems look worse than others. Mega Drive 1 looks awful, the NES looks awful, Sega Saturn (Japanese) looks pretty good but still way behind s-Video and RGB. Dreamcast also looks OK in composite. Again another Japanese system.

Easy. Laserdisc video is encoded in composhit. Outputting S-Video wouldn't improve upon it so most Laserdisc players didn't bother - though as I'm sure you're aware some did. Why they didn't knowing full well this thing was a video game player beats me. There is an RGB mod.

Good luck on that one, it only got a release here in the U.S. and only best buy has the rights to it meaning you have to buy it from them directly.

I know they had it in there stores for a period but you have to buy it from their website now. I am tempted to scoop it up but honestly don't feel like paying $23 for the blu ray plus shipping(same extras on dvd version released a year ago I believe) Hulu has it? I'll have to look into that.

I have four players and over 300 Laser Disc movies that I bought over the years before DVDs hit the market. The picture quality of a Laser Disc is better then VHS but not as good as DVD. Get a Laser Disc Player only for out of print titles and one beautiful function that cannot be done with a DVD. Since a laser disc is in analog encoded video without the heavy compression of digital, you get rock solid Jog Shuttle frame by frame forwards and backward.

As APE said, there is no benefit to using s-video. The comb filter on all laserdisc players is better on the composite end. For a laserdisc to look acceptable on a modern HDTV you need a deinterlacer, possibly with an upscaling feature. The one inside the TV won't cut it. Here is an old article, but still relevant if you want to watch laserdiscs on a modern TV:

If done correctly with good equipment, you can get a DVD like experience. Also just like DVD, some laserdiscs had much better transfers, but you'll have to do research on which they are.

I used to have laserdisc player and there is one serious problem with them presently. As they are old format and no longer supported, spare parts for players are also hard to get, and no one makes new player either.

The most common problem with laserdisc player is the spindle. They can wear out and make loud screeching noise or just up and quit running. While replacement used players are cheap on eBay, shipping is usually killer.

I have since sold off all but on LD I had when I got DVD or BD counterparts. The one I still have (and will take to my grave!) is Song of the South by Disney. Frickin' rare and Disney is being a bitch about not issuing the movie at all.

PS I also have a single CED, found at Goodwill. Tron. No it's not for sale either as I loved the movie back then.
