Right, having treated myself to a nice shiney PS3  i am now faced with the problem of my Mian TV being 10 years old, very crap sound and picture quality and the PS3 only works in B&W!! :crying: I need to get a HD TV but being tight, need it to be as cheap as anything... Any suggestions?? Sound output quality is a major concern has we have surround setup anyways..
try www.3pins.com, all there tvs are collection only, but if theres a branch near you its worth checking out, i got a 37" hitachi hd lcd from there for £429 a couple of months ago, plus the do 12 month warrenteee, its refurb stock, but i havent had a prob with mine as yet! one thing i would say when looking for a lcd tv, is dont go for the cheap no-name makes, the price may look good, but build quality is often poor, you get what you pay for really, go for main brand stuff, i highly recommend LG screens, exellent build quality, good price and tonnes of features, also try to look for a TV with more than 1 component input, and make sure is has VGA plus hdmi. the more inputs the better really!
make sure it supports the main HD signals 480p,720p, 1080i, dont worry too much about 1080p as you wont notice the difference on a screen under 42" and besides 1080p TVs are still very expensive, this main things to look out for are the response time, contrast ratio and brightness (the higher the better)
Sound output is being handled by the PS3 side via optical out, so no need to worry about that. I assume you are using Dolby Digital 5.1 and not Dolby Pro-logic for your surround processing?
ummm...... lol.... think it may be pro-logic..... The main thing at present is to get a colour picture out of the Jap PS3 i have....
have no experience of ps3's but with the ps2 it will only show up in mono if your conneting it throught the compsite cable, if you have a old ps1 or ps2 rgb scart try that, should work then!
ahh cool... not sure if i have an old scart cable kicking around but will try and dig one out when i get home. Cheers Buddy!
Would you like me to test my Jap model with a variety of cables for you? I can do it tonight and let you know what I come up with. I still have a small portable CRT TV and can use that to test.
Cheers for the offer guys. DD - PM sent Parris - Cheers for the offer mate.. gonna have a proper play tonight as after an initial 5 mins of testing i reboxed it as we had to shoot down to London to help my Bro in law and wife move house... OH: Will let you know (red: Bombard with PM's) if i have any further probs though.. Now trying to work out how i can afford a new TV!! lol
Okay, I didn't realise you had already taken delivery of the PS3 - let me know if you need any assistance. You'll also be glad to know your PS2 keyboard / mouse combo will work on this unit save you having to buy a bluetooth one or typing everything in with the controller.
Polaroid FLU-3232 twin HDMI, 6.5ms refresh 32" screen, I got one for £400 in Dixons, and it's awesome with a HD signal, SD stuff through SCART is a bit iffy though, but you will get that with most HDTV's. Sound is weak, but thats what the big floor standing speakers and amp are for.
right quick update.. everything, no matter whether pal or NTSC games and whatever settings lal seem to run in B&W.. thats either using a Scart (PS1 one) or a Composite (RCA's)... Have i got a duff PS3 or is my TV well and truly crappy! ( tis an old bush ex ONDigital unit!)
I just got one of these last May with my tax return: http://www.vizio.com/products/detail.aspx?pid=16 On sale at my local sears for $550 - good deal. Really good picture, no glare, very good definition between lights and darks, with every conceveable output hookup known to man on the back (it even has an ethernet port on the back, for some reason.) The sound from the TV is pretty weak from the television itself, but sounds good through a home theater setup (which will be my next big purchanse here.)
you're from Europe right? and got yourself a JPN PS3, correct? if system works in b&w no matter what then it simply means your tv is not a multisystem television set(in Europe you have a pal standard, in Japan - ntsc). it's time for a new tv ^_~ I would suggest getting HD CRT's while you can, (Sony Wega), they are awesome, quality is amazing and price at very affordable level. cheers!
ahhh... so that explains it all.. my 'free' TV is officially naff!!! lol I forgot about HD CRT's.. do they work in teh same principle as the LCDs just not aflat panel??? I.e they take HDMI input and component etc..?
PLEASE for the love of GOD do NOT get a Sony LCD TV, by all means get a Sony CRT, but nothing sucks harder than a Sony LCD at about £300 more expensive than the LG or Samsung components inside it! I loved the phrase used by someone else a while ago, but it is so apt as Sony LCD TV's "blow monkey chunks".
