I managed to pick up a few of these over the past month or so. I've never seen Road Blasters on VHS before. It's used with the Takara Video Challenger system which is just a light gun that's attached to your TV. The Macross game is the same, one is laserdisc and one is VHD. This is an actual VHD cassette for those who aren't familiar with it:
how much is that road blaster VHS tape worth? one of my recycle store was used to have one of these. may be still have it.
Amazing about the road blasters vhs. It reminds me of the Captain Power tv show they had in the states in the 80s, where you can shoot the gun at the tv and it registered hits. Maybe it has something similar to recognizing the signal, and then the system blacks out while the tape searches, my guess.
I came across an article about something like that some time ago. From what I remember, there's no searching, instead you just play along until you run out of lifes, at which point it's game over (as in, the gun won't let you shoot any more). There's no branches or any other kind of interactivity.
This is an example of the light gun. Usually it came boxed with one cassette. You could buy other cassettes as accessories. http://cgi.ebay.com/VIDEO-CHALLENGER-VHS-GUN-CONTROLLER-1987-BOXED-JAPAN-/360271363291
Wow, I have never before seen a VHD cassette, they look fragile  How do those LD and VHD games work? I suppose they work MUCH better than the VHS ones, the only one I've seen in action is the Captain Power game, and it wasn't so great... :-(
The actual VHD looks like a record. The white part is the casing. When the cartridge is inserted into the player it opens the top and pulls in the "record" and it's read by a stylus-type thingy. I think the LD game works by making selections through the remote. At least that's what I read. The guy who did the writeup said it took him quite a while to figure out even with some knowledge of Japanese. I mostly just tested the disc for laser rot and left it at that. I really haven't had the chance to sit down and try to figure out how to play it.
Thanks for the pics, very interesting items laser games appeal to me in a big way, I thought after the Road Blasters FX on MSX revelation I'd seen it all!
Very similar to Action Max and Captain Power. Doesn't really do anything but keep score on the gun itself. There is no actual connection (wired or wireless) between the TV and the gun. All the gun does is keep score based on some embedded hot spots in the video fields. The Macross SF game is just a trivia game with video clips from the series. Very similar to a few of the trivia laserdisc games that came out in the mid-80s here in the US. Sorta neat due to the Macross license, but almost impossible to play unless you can read Japanese proficiently.
Do you have many more VHD's? They're quite amazing I think. The way they load intregued me the most. I used to have a large-ish collection a few years back (probably 70-100 VHD's) Anyone have footage of the VHS games? Im interested in how they work.
You can find quite some footage of the Captain Power VHS game in YouTube iirc. Dunno about the others though :/
Just thought I'd let you guys know that I put this in auction for $0.99 yesterday....in case you're interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/Road-Blaster-Ja...pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item43a0727ab0
