Some of you are already away I am sure, but there is a program called dosbox that emulates an old pc PROPERLY and does all kinds of things to get old games to run quite fine on a newer pc. You don't have to tweak himem, of old cd-rom drive settings. It does it all for you. It allows for you to play all the old classics without the hassle. What I would like to point out is how incredibly easy it is to use and that no one here should be afraid to use it. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1 First install the small exe. When run, it loads a dos window with tutorial, and is easy to use. The basics: Make a directory and put the old game in it. Then you mount the folder as the "c" drive: mount c c:\oldgames. If you need a cd-rom drive to install from, or have an old cd, you create a virtual old style dos boot cd-rom drive. mount d c:\oldcd -t cdrom (from files in a folder) or mount d d:\ -t cdrom (to do your cd-rom drive) The folder you mounted before is where you install to. So very easy. So far I have been enjoying with full screen LCD syndicate, x-com and many others. You can even record the soundtracks of the old games if you love them that much. This is really one gem of a program. So I am sure some of you are off to have fun. I am currently creating suicide troops with exploding torsos in syndicate. They sure don't make games like that anymore. -ASSEMbler:thumbsup:
I tried using DosBox to play Space Hulk 2, but it wouldn't work properly. Space Hulk and Space Hulk 2 have SOOOOO many problems with newer PCs. I tried Space Hulk 1 first, but I think it won't work on PCs with more than 25 megabytes of RAM...
the easy frontend to use is DOSShell, and D-FEND as a configurator. And to get out of DOSbox , you just type exit.
I've always heard of this program but never knew exactly what it did. Thanks for telling us more about it! Maybe now I can run some old apps of mine properly on a P4 instead of going to the old Pentium II.
There is also a port of it that runs on a modded xbox. I have it on both my softmodded xbox's and its great. It has a built in virtual keyboard but the controls can all be mapped to the controller. I cant remember if it supports a USB keyboard or not. If it did you would have to add USB ports by yourself. Anyway it runs great on the xbox. I played Alone in the Dark on it, and Tank Wars is a classic that my whole family plays when we are bored.
I could never quite get it to work right for Death Rally, which is a shame as VDMS doesn't work for it. VDMS is the first port of call for getting DOS games to work on XP, for me at least - a lot less hassle than DOSBox, and works fine most of the time.
Great software to play the old Lucasarts graphical adventures with (and better than ScummVM on the PC IMO).
hmmm maybe you people should check Silverbolts old topic out, of where to find this and that. http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1629
I've used DOSBox since the .5x days, and it has come a long way. That reminds me, I was planning on starting up a new game of System Shock... Death Rally is working great for me. What's the problem?
Dosbox is great. It's pretty much the only way you can play Return to Zork nowadays (aside from keeping an ancient PC around).
The sound in Death Rally was skipping. I tried adjusting it in various ways, but it was either visually laggy with working sound or perfect framerate with skipping sound. I gave it a go on two reasonably beefy PCs with quite different hardware, and after that I gave up. I probably didn't fiddle too much, mind. I have a 300MHz Celeron laptop around most of the time which generally does the trick, but its odd graphics hardware often brings as many problems as solutions. Some ATi chipset that nobody bothered to write any decent drivers for.
