Ok, I've been sitting on a Development box for a couple years now, and I've finally decided to try and get the most out of it. I picked up the box from another ASSEMbler forum user who originally purchased it from a confidential source at the now defunct Sierra On-Line. It includes the SCSI drive, so my hopes are that maybe a build of one of their games (Hoyle Casino, Maximum Pool) still lingers. This project requires a lot of legacy hardware and is bound to cost me a chunk of change to get it running, so I would appreciate any feedback where needed. First off, here's what tools I have in my possession: Dreamcast Development box ver. 5.24 and the PC... Adaptec 2940U SCSI card (x2 just in case) 50-pin SCSI terminators, active (x3) 50-pin SCSI cable

First things first. The PC end of things needs to be up and running. I've got 2 questions for the community. 1) I'm thinking of installing Windows 98 second edition. Are there any issues I should be aware of (driver compatibility), or should I just go with straight 98? 2) The processor. Sega recommends a P2. Will the AMD ruin any part of the setup?
Everything is pretty much straightforward. You are not going to notice any major problems with windows 98 SE over vanilla 98 as they both suck, but yeah SE is the one to aim for. The Katana also works on Windows 2000 and Windows XP without any hassle and it could probably run on Vista and 7 with effort. Just remember to install the adaptec ASPI drivers before the kit. AMD is going to make no difference to the katana kit whatsoever as most of the standard x86 instructions are the same with intel too. Sega reccomends Pentium II simply because being forced to use a Pentium 1 again would put you into a coma. Also if you want to hook up a GD writer you'll need an extra cable
Thanks for the quick answer. Now for the slow string of updates as I wait for things in the mail.... and a Win98 install.
If Windows XP is already on the machine just leave it on and use that 98SE may not take to the newer components in your system anyway and XP works just fine.
I wouldn't spend my time on trying to use Windows 98, XP,... Back in january 2010, I made a replacement wnaspi32.dll so that people could use the devkit with Windows7 64bits: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?25882-How-To-Use-the-Katana-SDK-on-Windows-7 I've been using my DC devkit with a Core2Duo 2,6 ghz & Win7 64bits since then.
I remember reading (years ago) something about, if you use win98 that you could see an extra partition on the Katana hard drive? Can anyone verify this?
Windows 98 made no difference to partition viewing as most modern OS see them all anyway, except for NT or 95, which most people don't use
It's mounting the CDL DA, but not the CDL GD-M when the PC boots. I've been stuck on this for a while now. The DA check is also missing the GDM.
