I was just thinking about video game shops. A few shops still sell brand new games for the PS2, PSP and the Wii even though these consoles are discontinued. Obviously, once the stock runs out, they are not going to sell any more of them, but It's 2016 and I can still get a brand new physical copy of GTA Liberty City Stories for the PS2. Seeing that many more people are buying digital copies now, than in the 7th generation, do you think that 10 years from now we will still be able to buy used physical PS4 or Xbox One games in a place like GameStop or Cex ? I think that by that time, the only physical games from the 8th generation that would still be sold in stores would be sports games and shovelware that nobody wants.
I think we will be able to buy Sunset Overdrive "Day One Edition" without problems. Come on, we can buy Perfect Dark Zero Collector's Edition factory sealed for cheap. It's not like N64 extremely expensive games anymore. But we can't really generalize like that. The Perfect Dark example fits, but think about Shenmue II or even Pokémon Stadium 2. As for the Wii games, I suppose those games were extremely cheap to make (perhaps because they are DVD? or the publishers were fooled by the large installed base lol) and are very easy to find. (Except Zelda Skyward and The Last Story)
I think not because in my understanding games will be incomplete. If I purchase SFV 10 years from now, if there's no Sony or Capcom networks, I can't even download the patches/updates.
I think at best you might be able to download them from essentially mirrors with a jailbroken system. It's the only way to get original Xbox DLC that never showed up on a disc (so not counting the Halo map pack).
This is banking on the hope that these systems will be blown wide open, while we see the state the Vita is in four years later. Also banking on being able to use "debugging" functions like the package installer on the PS3. It's too early to tell just yet I think. And yes, I know about the current state of PS4 hacking development, but we see nothing yet directly effecting the system software.
They'll probably do a complete edition when all is finished for those who live in Buttfuck Mississippi that don't have good internet or any internet.
True, but usually the more popular systems eventually get the the point where people can load software that isn't 100% allowed. The 360 has been like that for years, and the Wii is so easy that it only requires a very very very common game and a file on an SD card. Maybe, or maybe the complete/Gold/GOTY edition just has a download code for the DLC.
Consider how old the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 are already. That is the generation when the corporations behind the consoles started worrying about console security. I'm telling you that there are no loopholes that simple and easy in any of the current generation systems, and even look at the PS3 needing a hardware flasher for hacking on updated systems. Eventually, we might see some serious breakthroughs, but like the Vita, don't count on it.
