Hello all, A guy is currently recreating Link's Awakening using the Ocarina of time look, with some additions (temples,....) Here is a link to his patreon page : https://www.patreon.com/user?u=2683584 And here is a video that present the project.
As we have seen recently, Nintendo can indeed stop this project (sadly). Moreover, it involves patreon, which can be seen as a way of getting money using Nintendo IPs. But as it looks more like a hack, Nintendo may just not stop this project. We'll see what will happen.
If he waited until the hack was ready, he wouldnt be getting any money for that, and sadly it probably does consume a LOT of his time.
Project like this indeed takes a lot of time. But we have already seen many projects like this being stopped by Nintendo. People should be aware of that before starting a such project. The guy is probably very skilled, so he could try to do an all new game. Talking about getting money for that, this is definetly what Nintendo don't want to see : people getting money while using Nintendo IPs without agreement. As an "indie" developper, I totally understand that the time spent on every project is the most important investment. This is why projects need to be very well prepared (regarding the laws and stuffs like this).
To this day it is the only game in the series that hits me right in the feels. Even if the big N puts a halt to the project, I am happy just to know that someone cared enough to try.
Looks like Link's awakening is special for many of us. It was my first Zelda game. Even if it was the German version, I have really enjoyed playing the game.
OK, if he's got a Patreon where one of the reasons for it is for ROM hacking, I can kinda side with Nintendo if they C&D this. I feel that monetizing game hacking is scummy. I mean, this is similar to why Alvin Earthworm's Patreon was slapped down: he was asking for money using Nintendo and SEGA characters as incentive.
