I'm looking to mess around with Linux and I don't know where to start. What version(distro?) do you guys recommend/ use personally?

I'll be installing on a generic AMD box and once I've learned a few things I would like to attempt an install on a crusoe powered tablet.

for starters, kubuntu, mandriva and suse (in order) are the most user-friendly.

Gentoo. By far the hardest install, but so worth it. Portage just shits all over the rest.

Seconded Ubuntu/Kubuntu (install Gnome and KDE, decide which you like - I personally prefer gnome as KDE is trying to be windows too much to me). Synaptic (service for downloading software) is better than anything else I've seen for newbies

How long until you get dependency nightmares? I will admit some other package must be out there, but after having Redhat & Suse boxes become unupgradable due to dependencies I said Fuck Dat shit.

I agree with you. I use Ubuntu, because i prefer Gnome as well. On my old notebook i installed Xubuntu (that uses Xfce).

As for linux distros, i suggest Ubuntu, Fedora, DSL or Kurumin (this one uses KDE though).
