I swear that PCB they have sticking out looks SOOO familiar. I've seen it posted on this site before.
1) Why is this in off-topic instead of general? 2) White debug/demo kits *usually* have a chrome bezel (like the premium kits). Not a white one like the value kit. -hl718
Sorry for posting this in off-topic if it is not appropriate. I always post non-game related news in off-topic, (operating systems etc) Feel free to move it though!
- It's true. - Retail - No modchip! - Heres a link to it: http://www.dlpdesign.com/usb/dlptxrx-v13-ds.pdf -Or why not even in *shock, horror* the 'Xbox Dev Section'? hehe
I guess im the only one who couldnt care less and doesnt want linux running on every appliance in the house? Nevertheless, good achievement if they indeed got that working.
It's not actually running Linux at the moment though, is it? Just displaying a hacked up shader routine from what I have seen and read.
Yeah its a hacked vertex shader. Apparently they wernt signed in the King Kong game. I think theres possabililty for it, but one of the guys over at xbox scene thinks he figured out a way to cause a overflow that the hyper visor couldnt do anything about. However until a exploit is found to test it, its kinda useless and theres no way to test it
so in other words, in the near future, we may be able to use KingKong as an exploit to launch possibly linux and other homebrew stuff, without the need to modify the console in any which way?...ala GTA exploit on psp? Ryan
Maybe, but what this really means is that the xbox can run unsigned files in some way. Since the Vertex Shaders were not signed they could be altered and ran. I would put my money on people looking for more unsigned files in lower budget games for a better way in. Vertex Shaders arnt really all that usefull but should some small company screw up and put a unsigned file in there thats important and could give hackers system control then that would be the bee's knees ^^
The thing that I hate about this is why people release a "coming soon" preview. Its not like this guy is releasing a product to be sold, so there's not much reason in creating hype for it. There is the whole "glory of being the first to hack the console", but he's in a mask, so nobody even knows who it is. So what is the point? At this point I question the validity of Linux on the 360. The whole boot process is still unknown, as is a few other key elements (like, oh say... processor architecture?). I'm not a hardcore linux geek, but does anybody know at any point of time when it, or any operating system for that matter, was made to run on a platform when either of these 2 key elements are unknown? Being able to execute arbitrary code and initializing an OS are two different things. I've been paying attention to this. It's interesting, but unfortunatly his concept ends up simplifying to "well X will work if only we can cause Y". I can think of a lot of scenarios like this, but they aren't very plausible because of Y. I'm not undermining his efforts or saying that he's wrong. But I've also noticed that his mentality is that the hypervisor might not exist or might not be capable of detecting his X, a nearsighted move IMO.
you have to keep in mind it was presented on a convention the chaos computer club where most of this hacking stuff is done live which means they could have sit there around a 360 smoke weed and trying to figure a way to hack it out and when they had it they just showed it
The whole thing might have ended in a rather embarrassing, and less interesting soldering session had that female panelist managed to strain the power cable any further over those delicate looking PCB connections before being warned off by someone running in and plugging the unit in for her. Okay, I am not sure, but I saw the 360 logo come up and King Kong start, then it went blank... could the av cable not have been just plugged into the back of whatever laptop the guy seemed to be furiously typing at or would the screen not have gone blue (as my projector does) when the AV connection is dropped (even for a split second)? A splitter, junction to AV might do the same. If it IS genuine then.....nice......
