Before attempting to reinvent the wheel, I was wondering if there was already a good website or list of PS2 retail releases. I have found a good one for Japan, and then also lists of all the different console model numbers. I have not been able to find anything with enough detail that I expect or require. So basically need info for retail PS2 systems, some description, model number preferrable, barcode not required (but helpful) and for all countries besides Japan. If you know of any site with this type of info, I'd like to know. I've already got all I can from rfgeneration, but it is quite incomplete there.
If you don't already know about this, the model numbers didn't always indicate the actual hardware revision of the console. Here is what I have at hand, but you need to do some nit-picking. Particularly around the D-chassis models because the information on this chassis is very odd. The information here can be very inaccurate because... there is no way that I can possibly own all of these consoles. I got the mainboard models from reading the SCE service manuals, studying their tools and from input from the PS2Ident project (so, special thanks to all contributors!) The last service tool supported only up to some of the I-chassis models, so anything after that was purely from observing other submissions from users. A-chassis (Japan-only): SCPH-10000 (GH-001) ROM 1.00J and v1.01J SCPH-15000 (GH-003) ROM v1.01J A+-chassis (Japan-only): SCPH-18000 (GH-003) ROM v1.20J AB-chassis (Japan-only): SCPH-18000 (GH-008) ROM v1.20J B/B'-chassis (US-only) - AUTO TILT motor model SCPH-30001 (GH-004/005, B/B'-chassis) ROM v1.10U C/C'-chassis (US and Europe-only): SCPH-30001/2/3/4 (GH-005/006, C/C'-chassis) ROM v1.20U/E D-chassis - most confusing chassis model, with the most variations. SCPH-30000/1/2/3/4 (GH-010) SCPH-30000/1/2/3/4 R (GH-013) SCPH-35000/1/2/3/4 There exists the GH-016 as well, but I don't know what model(s) it was mounted on. All D-chassis consoles have ROM v1.50. This was the first version to support the osdmain.elf universal update file. F-chassis - new BGA-mounted MECHACON, Rohm RTC-IC and SANYO SF-HD7: SCPH-30000 & SCPH-30001/2/3/4/5/6/7 R (GH-015) ROM v1.60 Seems to be the first model to be also released in Asia (06) and Korea (05) and Taiwan (07). The Japanese model doesn't seem to have the "R" in its name, as the service tool indicates that it is a "SCPH-30000". First model to support the CXP103049 MECHACON, the Rohm RTC IC (as well as the existing Ricoh device) and both the SONY and SANYO optical blocks. G-chassis: SCPH-37000/SCPH-39000 series (GH-017, GH-019 and GH-022), ROM v1.60 The SCPH-39000 series appears to be the first release for Russia (08). I don't have information on the SCPH-37000, so it seems like it was only released in Japan. There were two versions of the SCPH-39000's MECHACON. The earlier one with firmware v3.6 was released in every territory that the SCPH-39000 series appeared in, while the newer one (v3.8) was only released in Japan and in Asia. The late Japanese and Asian models had -003GG and -403GG version numbers printed on their MECHACON devices respectively. Unlike the older models, the SONY service tool no longer gave the option for the T487 lens... so I guess that it wasn't made to support the old KHS-400B optical blocks. H/I/J-chassis: SCPH-50000-11 (GH-023, GH-026 and GH-029), ROM v1.70 and v1.90. ROM 1.90 was the first version with support for the extended languages (Russian, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese), so I guess that the releases in these regions got the consoles with ROM v1.90. This was the one and only model released in mainland China, as the SCPH-50009. The Chinese sets were manufactured by SONY Wuxi and had ROM v1.90. As for the J-chassis - I have seen only one photograph of it. It was a Japanese SCPH-50000NB model, so I don't know whether any other region got it. Not all of the SCPH-50000NB models were J-chassis units though. Support for nearly all regions started with this model. K-chassis: SCPH-70000 (GH-032, GH-035), ROM v2.00. As with any slimline console, this one had a universal DVD ROM. The BOOT ROM was also largely universal, except for the PlayStation driver. As such, this was the final model that had differing ROMs for NTSC/PAL. Support for all regions (0-12) started with this model. L-chassis: SCPH-75000 series (GH-037, GH-040, GH-041), ROM v2.20 The very first slimline console to not have a real IOP device, but the PPC emulator instead. The ROMs are entirely universal, with the visible differences being the result of software-manipulation by the IOP emulator. M-chassis: SCPH-77000 series (GH-051, GH-052), ROM v2.20 N-chassis: SCPH-79000 series (GH-061, GH-062), ROM v2.20 The thickness of the PlayStation 2 was further reduced. The expansion connector on the mainboards seem to be starting to disappear around here. P-chassis: SCPH-90000 series (GH-070, GH-071), ROM v2.20 R-chassis: SCPH-90000 series (GH-072), ROM v2.30 The final version of the PlayStation 2, as I know of. The folks who deal with FMCB know that this model appeared sometime around the 3rd quarter of 2008 because the US models had a datecode of 8C. This ROM has no support for any system updates. X-chassis: Should be for all PSX models (DESR-5000/5100/5500/7000/7100/7500/7700). My DESR-5100 has the XPD-001 and ROM v1.80J. I know that some newer models had the XPD-005 and ROM v2.10J. PlayStation 2 TV: Only released in Europe, the PX300-1 had ROM v2.50.
Thanks sp193, but this is mostly what I am able to find. Information on the hardware itself rather than the retail packaging it was released in, which is what I am after. For example, in EU I know that there is the PlayStation 2 two SCPH-77004 CB (Carbon Black) that was released on its own, but then also it was included in the Platinum Starter Pack with Ratchet: Gladiator. What other boxes was it released in? Or how there are at least 2 different Hot Pack releases in Australia. This is what I am looking for. So far I have identified 105 console releases, without counting Japan. theps1master, Automobile PS2 is 5 special color releases 2000? (stated) total worldwide and 666 (stated) per country, which looks like US, UK (or EU) and Japan in Red, White, Blue, Yellow and Silver. Here is the site I plan to reference when I get to Japan releases: http://maru-chang.com/hard/scph/index.php/second_son/english/
I am up to 164 releases on my list now, including Japan but not Test/Debug or PSX/DVR. After I am done, I will post the list here if anyone is interested.
I think I have found all I can find about the regular releases. I have in my list now 230 consoles. I am sure there are some I have missed, but I am now working on finding barcodes and box images. I have prepared this spreadsheet showing the information I have gathered. Most columns should be self explanatory, except these: F,B,C: these are to indicate if I have images of box front, box back or console. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-InVDuZN-r_ZymTM-HQY8FuhxbNN9fgQWbxmMhkFJTY/edit?usp=sharing After this phase of looking for images, I will prepare a zip of the images before I move to edit phase to share if anyone wants them. If anyone has more information that I am missing, feel free to let me know.
Regular black, Charcoal Black is for Slim type only. If you do Google Image search on "SCPH-50009" you will find pictures of the info plate of the console, like this: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/446/18008940934_ec3c4326e7_b.jpg But finding information on Region 9 is not easy. I manually searched for all the models from Japan but with 9 on the end and can only find those two SCPH-50009 (Black and Satin Silver) to be confirmed. Today I was able to find most barcodes (JAN) for the Japanese consoles. There are very few I need now.
Mine : SCPH-50004 UPC : ? dont' understand.... Color : Black Country : Europe VGC : ? Games : Tekken 4 + Final Fantasy X Found some pics of the package online : Spoiler Unfortunately, I don't have the white box cover anymore (binned by my bro).
UPC or Barcode, EAN/JAN etc is on the box. For this one, I didn't have, I added as #234 a France release. The primary barcode I need is from the white outer box, although knowing the inner box barcode is nice too. This is, by far, the one that is the hardest, these packs that have the outer box. You can say that people rarely save boxes from their consoles, but they save the outer box even less!
I have this feeling that this label is a fake for a few reasons: It has the "Safety Mark" certification logo, which is used in Singapore (hence HK/SG consoles). The SCPH-50009 is a H-chassis, not G-chassis (SCPH-39000 series!) model. It is a NTSC-C console, not NTSC-J. The bottom of the label is cut off. I saw one without the bottom cut off, but it is equally fake. That console had a NTSC-U/C disc in it... which obviously wouldn't boot on a NTSC-C console. So it was either for show or is modded, if it can boot such a disc. Region 9 (China) only received one model, which is the SCPH-50009. The one that I saw is satin silver, with no "SS" after the model number. It was manufactured by Sony Wuxi.
It seems to me that Sony doesn't put color codes (like SS for Satin Silver) on the consoles themselves, and puts it on the box instead.
I have found this picture of a release, but I cannot determine what it is. It is a cached Ebay image found on google. The listing does not exist anymore and no larger images. The only thing I know about it is that it is SCPH-30004 R, but because of the flash on the package, I cannot make out what game is included. Perhaps someone here knows. PS: My PS2 list is up to 290 releases now.
Ah ok I just dig out all that info and realize that part of the job is done. Up to 311 releases now with help from @AKuHAK From that tho, while manual exists, I cannot find anything about these: SCPH-50008 SS SCPH-77010 CB SCPH-79008 CB Not even picture of the console or plate. Google seems to mix results a lot, even when I tell it to search for "SCPH-79008" it will give me lots of 79001 and 70001 results and it gets annoying.
This is some good reference since I'm going back to collecting these models. I only have 2 out of the 300+ listed.
BTW all Japanese models with release dates can also be found at official sony page: https://www.jp.playstation.com/support/repair/eor_list.html#02
