Hi, I am compiling a list a list of game engines from 1999-2009. The oldest console is to be the Dreamcast. To my bewilderment there is basically no information on game engines used on last gen systems, that have no PC-counterpart. Especially on Dreamcast. I guess that is due to the following facts: A)Game Engines were most likely used on just one specific console and were mostly used inhouse. B) Instead of publically praising ones engine´s capabilities they were more of a corporal secret and treated as such. C) With engines not being used as marketing tools like today, journalists simply didnt bother. The immaturity of the Internet made it quite pointless to compile a list as well, because it is highly unlikely that a printed magazine was ever to gain any (monetary) value from doing so. D) The paradigms of programming have changed a lot. Less hardware optimisations and such. If somebody knows any useable information on older game engines , I would be very grateful. I know the Dreamcast-era quite well, stuff like Sega Rally 2 being a WinCE port of the Model3 original and stuff like that. The funny thing is, even though I know that this is true, I dont know where I got this information from in the first place, it is simply too long ago XD

I remember Yakumo saying that the engine used in Sonic Adventure was based on the one used for Sonic Jam (for Saturn).

And Nights ;) Yeah I know that. What I was looking for basically is a list of gameengies from the past that I can quote with "certainty". There is not even a mention of the game engine on the net on what used to power the older (or newer) Dead or Alive games. This is sad as these games where among the best-looking on at least three consoles in a row ( SS,DC,XBOX). What is the game engine that powers all these popular (but shit XD ) sportsgames from 2KSports? There are literally hundres of PS2 titles where no one knows what engine is used. Start with Tekken Tag. Or Soul Calibur. Do they share code? Are these seperate engines? I guess so, at least they were. Probably both proprietary to Namco, which is likely, and pretty optimised for PS2. But Soul Calibur 2 was relased on GC and Xbox as well... You see without a list or compilation these facts will soon irretrievably be lost ( if they are not yet). It is also strange that if you find any information on PS2/DC-engines it is like 95% from a Western company. Hardly ever from a JP- company , and then only bluckbusters titles.

There are a few Saturn games that give the engine name on the back of the case (Japanese games this is) such as Willy Wombat. Two that I remember from memory are :

Willy Wombat - AQV System (the game was developed by Westone and released by Hudson)
Tohshinden URA - Hyper Solid Engine (the game was developed by Nextech and released by Takara)

What happened to my post XD ? @Yakumo: Do you have any idea about Dreamcast games? My guess is that there were hardly any licensed engines in use from Japanese companies, apart from Middleware as CRI.
