    Hey,

Love the forum and the site, all of you guys filled my mind with info that i didn't know from when i was a kid. (with ass kissing finished) I thank you all. My question is I want a Freakin' M2 i have looked everywhere (everywhere being Ebay) and i can't find it. I googled the code name for the m2 and found a website showing the m2 linked to 2 other m2''s and a larger computer like machine. To my suprise the m2's where black and had a very n64ish control connected to it. I would like to know if anyone can give me a lead on the m2. My second question anyone want the standie for the ngage has to working units on it.? anyone anyone ahh the sytem always sucked...

I would like to welcome you to the board, hope you stay around. :smt023 The reason it is hard to find an M2 is because it is a prototype system. I have been looking for one myself for a few years now, but i can't seem to find one. :smt017

Welcome...I imagine you'll like it here...

If you're looking for M2, I can think of 3 ways to get it off the top of my head...

Well, the way you'd probably want it is the developer's system...which is what that boxy looking CD drive connected to a PC like device is. That's one that'll grab some major cash, as that's closest to what would have been released as a console...

But another way...which ASSEMbler, himself clued me into is to buy a M2 kiosk box...which...was if I remember correctly...(wheres that thread!) used for a display for corvettes...that has the M2 chipset in it.

The last way, is to buy one of the arcade incarnations of M2. The only one that springs to mind is Battle Tryst, as I read about it on NFG's site (great site by the way, NFG).

No matter what though, if you're really into play games on you consoles, rather than staring at them, you're gonna be really disappointed with M2...though i heard Battle Tryst was decent...

No luck involved, just patience, persistancy and money.

  7. Welcome! The kiosk versions of the M2 seem to pop up fairly frequently on eBay for a reasonable price, but I've never seen one of the white dev ones. As far as the arcade hardware goes, wasn't Battle Tryst about the only game released for it?

EDIT: Speak of the devil, here they are: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62054&item=8111249394&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V
19 available, have at 'em, boys!

Is anyone aware of any production runs of the controllers, or were they merely distributed with the dev units? And I'm sure this has been asked many times before, but if one were to come up with a nonexistant piece of M2 beta or demo software, would it be playable on the kiosk, or is this one of those things that goes unanswered because nobody has been able to try it? Also, wasn't the M2 supposed to be backwards compatable with the 3D0? So in theory, shouldn't 3D0 software run on this bad boy as well? Might be worth picking one up just to see.....

And finally, does anyone know if the 4 known M2 arcade games are emulated in MAME or other arcade programs at all?

I am looking for the White prototype M2, not the Black box units.

    .

from memory EDGE once mentioned that M2 would not be compatible with existing 3DO titles - something to do with its quad speed CD-ROM drive or something... think it was EDGE issue 20 or was it 40?

    cheers

From the research I have done on 3DO and M2, I have read that the M2 was supposed to be able to play 3DO games, and the original 3DO was going to be compatible with M2 games if you got the M2 accelerator for it. The M2 accelerator was going to be an add on for the 3DO that gave it the power of the M2, similar to what Sega was goning to do with the never released 64-bit upgrade for the Saturn. :smt117

Speaking of thes M2 kiosks, can you run any software on them, besides whatever car dealership software comes with it?

It can't run 3do games I suppose, but could you concievibly burn Battle Tyrst to a disc and play it on the m2 kiosk?

What I mean is that can this kiosk be used as a gaming machine? Not that I would ever try, just wondering.

Will those M2s play games? Are those even real M2s? Are those the kiosk M2s?

Those kiosk "M2" units , aka Black Box, do not play 3DO games. They used the M2 technology to make the unit, and they play a special type of DVD and CD.

    .

i will have to dig up the article but the M2 version Matsushita was planning to release would not be compatible with existing 3DO and believe its prototype was indeed white console with the memory card between the front joypad ports and square CD door on the top???
this is from the memory so may not accurate...

    cheers

  17. Those models in the eBay auctions are indeed M2 units - they are the kiosk models found in some car dealerships and other applications (thought I saw somewhere that they were used in some Japanese home creation kiosks as well, or something like that). They are technically the only "released" M2 hardware out there, not counting the arcade machines.

Kyuusaku, you had the same question I do - could these models possibly run M2 software? After looking around a bit, I found a picture of the back of the unit, which has a port seperate from the PC-like COM ports that is clearly labeled, "Controller" and looks much like the port on a normal 3DO. So I'm not sure if one were able to come across some software and a controller what would happen. As far as burning the arcade games to a disc and trying, I suppose it's worth a shot, but something tells me it won't work....

And good luck on finding that Dev system, Alien Workshop...

Thanks, the only thing harder than finding one will be paying for it.

any way, The black box M2 uses a strange type of disc, called M2 CD and M2 DVD. Finding blank ones to burn could get difficult. I know there are a few prototype M2 controllers floating around, they might work with this unit, as for a regular 3DO game pad, I don't know but i doubt it would work. Getting one of these units should not be hard as they are on ebay all the time. The price is too high for it on that particular auction, but i have seen them as low as $40. I might get one and test it out.

  19. Yeah, I'm kindof of the same mind - looking to get a cheap one to see what the heck it can actually do. I know we're doing a lot of speculating here, and there are the countless websites out there that have the history and hardware specs, but it doesn't seem like anyone's ever really just messed around with one of the things....

That being said, does anyone know of any unreleased M2 software (obviously in an unfinished form, as I don't think any games were ever finished for it) that have been made available in one form or another?

There was that D demo shown at E3 in like 1997 or something. Looked pretty complete, probably playable. I think there's a pic up on the board somewhere.
