So I have a little project going and I have gotten to a point that I'm stuck on. The project involves sending HDMI and USB over a distance of 25 feet. I could just get 2 cables for this but I'd prefer to have them both in one if possible. Anyone know of anything like that? I may be stuck at 15 feet or so since that's around the max range for USB and needs amps beyond that. The cable needs to have fullsize male HDMI on both ends and the USB needs to be male on one end and mini male on the other. The USB ends don't really matter too much since I could replace them easily enough. Any help given will be appreciated.
You could build one yourself. You could combine the two wires using plastic or rubber on the outside. You could cannibalize another cable with enough pins and connect the two adapters at the end. Or, you could build the wire totally from scratch. Those are my suggestions.
USB cables are only supposed to be 2-5 metres max (or something around that). You need a proper repeater really. You can buy HDMI/USB over CAT5E/6 converters to do it properly. Trying to rig up your own wont work so well.
The CAT5e/6 idea would be a good solution. Also, wireless USB hubs exist. I've never used one, but it may be helpful depending on what you're trying to do. http://www.geek.com/gadgets/belkin-home-base-makes-any-usb-device-wireless-904242/
I thought over it some more and will just build my own with a standard 25 foot HDMI cable and a 25 foot USB cable with a repeater on the end. Will cost me around $15 total so not a bad deal. Hardest part will be joining the 2 cables together. Any suggestions there besides electrical tape? Personal experience shows it doesn't work well in hot locations and it does get hotter than hell here... EDIT: I thought of going wireless since the target device has a battery in it (Motorola Lapdock...) but the ends on it will be a bit too large for my uses.
You cant have a "repeater on the end". you would need a repeater every 2-5 meters - requiring possibly multiple repeaters and power for said repeaters along the route. Personally id buy something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HDMI-EXTE...?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item3a83d006dd and http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-TO-RJ...ther_Computing_Networking&hash=item4aa1e6145e Its not that much more expensive, saves you time and will actually work.
Get 25 feet of shrink tubing? You could always bundle the two cables, add some insulation to round it out and then shrink them together. Put a plastic snap-on neck at either end and it'll look like one cable. Simplest way to do it in my mind. The only issue is that deal with repeater(s). Either find an inline repeater that uses a second USB port for power (and have two male USB one the sending side and one on the receiving side) OR Just grab a USB to RJ45 adapter as mentioned above. The HDMI signal doesn't need to be boosted as 25 foot cables exist. Any longer and you'll probably want to look into repeating that too (again, mentioned above).
Second USB port for power is not needed since the lapdock won't need any power input at all. The keyboard and touchpad on it are powered by the built in battery. So unless the repeater uses more than 1.5 amps of current (my ports are current boosted) a single port for power is fine.
