I meant that if you get a cab cheap, you could easily do it up to meet requirements - or if your cheap cab wasn't suitable (e.g. 2 players and you want 4) then you can make a new control panel.

However, buying a cheap space invaders (dedicated, i.e. with space invaders artwork) cab and hacking it about is soul destroying. WHY must people MAME classic machines, too? :smt009

Oh, and the 6 slot option is entirely feasible.

I got a generic cab for nothing because it was "not working".

It took a week to clean all the smoke crap off it from 10 years in a club, but I got it up and running. One stick has a broken spring but still works, the buttons are rectangular fruit machine buttons, and there's a graphical glitch on the JAMMA board, but it works nonetheless. Again that price - NOTHING.

My 6 slot MVS board cost me £20.

New buttons and controllers I'll budget up to £50 for, although I'd be able to do it a lot cheaper.

That cost me £70 ($130), which I believe leaves me $380, or £200.

That's over $50 a game, and games are easy to pick up for that.

By the way, a generic cab here is obtainable for £50-100. And, a few days ago, a working 6 slot sold for £50. That's £150 total, which is just over half your budget. So, how exactly is the 6 slot out of the question?

Incidentally, 4 Slot MVS Cab for sale

Oh and Take a chance 6 slot... I would!!

There was also a 4 slot cab in oregon for sale, but I think it has gone.

Ooh, while I think of it, the links were just an example to show you that there ARE such licenses in certain states as I mentioned. They weren't to say hey obide by that! PURELY informational. Was just trying to help ya out, didn't want to see you struck down in your prime as you're a nice guy and all, but it seems my help wasn't welcome so I guess I won't try next time.

Incidentally, if the game required quarters, even temporarily, then you could always afford enough to buy more games :)

Good luck with whatever you decide to go for. Oh, and you seem to be going for expensive games whatever you decide - but if you can get KOF2002 for $70 then get it!! I'm sure it is worth like double... although double check with tonk perhaps ;-)

*edit* oh wait, I might be thinking of 2001

  3. It's not that your help wasn't welcome, it's just that you were being overly insistent with something that I have already looked into, considered, and am fully aware of (gambling/licenses, etc.), and it didn't seem like that was getting through at the time.

Those prices you listed sound wonderful, I just wish I could find them somewhere on the internet. Going from CoinOpExpress.com, a 6-slot is $184 whereas a 2-slot is $140. Cart prices were obtained from Neo-Geo.com, where KOF2K2 was indeed just $70. The 4-slot MVS cabinet you listed is in Florida, and the guy wants pickups only, which is absolutely out of the question. I've never even BEEN to Florida. :smt009
With what's available here, the audience we'd be catering to, and our funds, a two-slot or possibly 4 are going to be the only options. That 6-slot on eBay.... the massive amounts of rust on it just say no-way. If it were for my own, I might chance it, but as it's for a club from the school, I'd want it to be as close to new - at least the internals - as possible.

And you were leading up to what I thought you were with the classic cabinet thing. Basically, let me put it this way: If I come across a classic cabinet that is in my budget and works for any boards I may have aquired, I shall purchase it, and if it needs slight modifications, I shall make them. I find the whole idea of "don't buy this and change it because a collector could get it pretty and keep it in his storeroom" to be the ultimate arrogance and it greatly offends me, this idea that you should defer a cabinet to someone 'more worthy' because of the intended use.

I'm sorry if I came off as snappish, you had a lot of good advice that I did think over and appreciated. It's just that sometimes you like to hammer a fine point home with a sledgehammer, that's all. :smt023

I'm not saying a collector should lock a cab away, I'm saying it should indeed be appreciated by people, but in its original form if it is something unique. I personally would love to have the money available to have a working museum of arcade games for all to play and enjoy, in their original working condition. Certainly nothing to do with being "more worthy" of owning it.

It is like modifying consoles - lots of people disagree with that. Think of it also, if you like, as someone owning a Picasso and saying hmm I don't like that bit, I'll just paint over that section. Sure, it is your Picasso to do what you want with, but there are others who would have appreciated it more (and valued it at more) in its original (or restored) form. It would be kinda silly to turn a $1500 Space Invaders cab into a $200 generic just because you paid $100 for it in not perfect condition.

As for the fact you've already looked into it, well...

    1. You just insisted there aren't any such laws without saying "thanks, but I looked and there aren't any such laws in this state". You too came across as being pushy, there.

    2. It was also meant as a pointer for anyone else who reads this topic and thinks - hey cool, I'll put an arcade machine in the common room at college! who may be in another state, or country for that matter. ;-)

Before that post, dude... like when he said "...so arcade games aren't classed as gambling and so are tax- and license-free."

I *KNOW* that some states require licences, I also know they are required in some places in the UK. Therefore I was trying to help him out by pointing out a fact he may not have known.
