Looking for suggestions. Doesn't have to be very special (I'd prefer a 'clean' install (no unneeded add-ons). I want use a custom logo and colours and it must come with good anti-spam measures. Last timed I installed a PHPBB board (admittedly that was 5 years ago) it was riddled with spammers in five seconds flat. Willing to pay a small fee ~$100 but not much more. Can also be a hosted service. Anything except vBulletin any good these days?

    Thanks :)

vBulletin and IP.Board are the best. XenForo is made by ex vBulletin developers, but I find it a bit sparse on extra features. They're all paid - usually either a one-off fee or a recurring fee. Sometimes, the recurring fee still gets you the forum forever, but you won't be entitled to support/upgrades when it expires.

phpBB is fine. There are also basic forums built into most decent CMS platforms, or available for them for free. It's not the software that attracts spammers per se, it's poor security - so ensure you set it up to discourage spammers - even if you pay for the forum!

As a forum user I always find vBulletin to be the best and most comprehensive experience, if that matters to your decision at all.
