Hi guys, I'm working on a small project about how Alone in the Dark came to be.
I watched Frederick Raynal's GDC conference and I wanted to know if he made public the tools and protos for the game....

This has also been of interest to me, I'd love to try out his old 3Desk utility and any AitD betas. Has anyone tried to contact him about this before? Who knows, he might not mind releasing them.

I would also be very interested in this. I know the early prototype with the bubble heads is on YouTube, but I'm not sure if that one has been leaked in playable form. Pretty sure it's only the attic part of the game anyway. That game sure scared the crap out of me haha. Bought it on GOG with the first 3 games for $6.

I guess it depends on who owns the rights to those tools and prototypes, He left Infogrames shortly after the first game.

I'm sure that the stuff he showed at the GDC was in his possession and not something he'd have to ask Infogrames for. As for what happened to the company, I believe they merged with Atari (or something like
that). I might try writing a message to Fred, It shouldn't hurt to ask what the status of those files is. Look at how many prototypes of games have leaked in the past and nothing was done about it, the
real issues are with the tools.

Well, I contacted Mr. Raynal, and it looks like we won't be getting anything anytime soon. But it's nice to know anyway. Here's what he wrote:

    Hello ------,

Yes, I digged back 3Desk and old versions of the game for the GDC
presentation, not very easy to use through DosBox (and it was meant for a
    dedicated network organisation).
Unfortunatly, I don't have the rights to make them available. May be one
    day...

    Best regards,
    Frederick.

Ahh, that's pretty depressing. Now all we can do is wait and hope. I remember that Inforgrames kinda screwed him over with the release of AITD. He was really disgusted with them. Also Inforgrames merging with Atari makes sense since they published the mediocre AITD reboot.

I know this thread is old but as of around August Frederick Raynal won a lawsuit against infogrames and Atari giving him credit for 3desk and SceneEdit.

If someone has his email it's possible he can now let us use the tools. I don't have his email address unfortunately.
