On the SuperFX wiki page it lists Elite as one of the unreleased games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_FX Now, I can't seem to find any information to back this up. I'm thinking that someone has gotten confused with Elite the publisher who did release a game called Dirt Racer. Has anyone got any magazines or anything like that were Elite is mention as coming out on the SNES? Whilst I'm on the subject, I'm 99% sure that one of the other unreleased games, Powerslide, did get a release in Europe as Dirt Racer. Both Powerslide and Dirt Racer were developed by Motivetime and published by Elite. They both have very similar graphics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAp978pDFeo https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=G_v15IXZcHw#t=61 In fact to make things even more confusing this page lists a game called "Dirt Racer Elite", which they say: http://www.screwattack.com/news/super-fx-series-cancelled-super-fx-games Now to me, that seems that they've got the name of the publisher mixed up (again). Also from that page: Again, I think whoever wrote that article is getting things mixed up. It's far more likely Powerslide got developed into Dirt Racer, especially considering Winter Gold was developed by a different company called Funcom. EDIT: Ah ok, it seems that Elite on the SNES was never going to use the SuperFX chip anyway: http://www.unseen64.net/2010/09/09/elite-snes-mega-drive-gameboy-cancelled/
There is a alpha build of a racing game out there that would have been published by Elite. It's seems to be free range and does use the FX chip. I can't remember the name but it is out there as I've played it via emulation.
That would be Powerslide, which almost certainly got released as Dirt Racer and not as "Winter Gold" as that article on Screw Attack suggests.
Hmm, Elite looks pretty damn cool though..Not sure how they pulled off those graphics without a SFX chip.
I remember emailing Ian Bell about Elite for the SNES back when I was a kid. Unfortunately I no longer have that email account, but I remember Ian being really polite. Very nice guy. Doesn't sound like it got very far.
I used to know someone that had an Elite proto cart, so it's definitely out there. No idea how complete it is, though.
So nobody got a proto of Commanche kicking around then TBH I wouldn't be surprised if they never actually managed to get it to run on the SNES and the video is just a mock up on a computer.
Here's another one. Croc was originally a Yoshi 3D demo Argonaut made as a pitch for a 3D platformer on the SNES. Nintendo rejected the idea, then a couple of years later (and before Croc was finished), they showcased Mario 64 on the N64. Obviously Mario 64 is the better of the two, but it is running on much more powerful hardware. Here's the source, which I think is a fascinating article: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-04-born-slippy-the-making-of-star-fox If you look at Croc, it makes sense.
Factor 5 were supposed to have started work on a SFX powered Indy Jones game for Lucas, but the hardware was'nt powerful enough to handle it. Nic Cusworth was kind enough to chat to me about Transformers, it was running on a MK 2 SFX Chip, but the chip proved too costly for publishers to use it, so project was canned :-( And you've Martin oiper talking about SFX 2 powered FX Fighter in the thread i just created. Hope these help.
Always wanted to play FX fighter, SNES version. A enhanced version on pc don't interest me. I woulda liked to see what SNES coulda did with the limited hardware.
