Hi all, I have been wanting to build my own supergun for years now, but I just keep putting it off due to not finding the best guide for someone in the USA to build. I have come across several site's but it's for people that live in the UK (where I was born and lived for 30 yrs) and use scart, I would like to know if anybody knows where in the USA I could just buy one and then think about building another at a later time.
    Thanks.

I don't know, but if you look around there are guides to making superguns for people in the US. It's basically the same, only you need a signal convertor for the video, and you need a PSU that'll take 110V. Other than that, it's exactly the same.

I have some guides that I have in mind, but do you know of a guide that would be your number one to go off?, I have seen a video signal convertor on ebay rgb to vga, which i'm guessing would fit for a pc monitor which would work great for me, I have a 17 inch monitor doing nothing in the garage, also psu which is for arcade. I have the joysicks and buttons to make a control panel, I also bought a project box from radioshack and some push buttons and a rocker switch and fuse holders and fuses, I also saw a fully wired jamma harness on ebay that I want to buy.
    thanks for your input.

found a guide to use, I am also building the joysticks and it tells me to use 13 core cable or above, how many wires do I need to come out of the cable?

check jammanationx for the super gun guide, making a super gun is easy, for the US tv you just need a video encoder like neobitz or jrok. I recommend using jrok and jrok sync cleaner if you are going to use different arcade pcbs like capcom, konami etc. If you are going to use it for just for neogeo go with the neobitz. If you are going to make a joystick you need at least 13 wires for the joystick 4 ways, 6 buttons, a coin and start button.
Edit forgot about the ground cable that make 13 wires.

Building your own isn't terribly hard. When you seen how much it costs to buy one, building your own is very appealing. It may not look as nice depending on your skills, but making one that works is pretty easy if you can follow instructions.

i already have all the buttons and joysticks to make a control panel, But how do i connect the converter to the power supply?

yes i also looked at that one, the scart is what put me off, i also did a search for a scart to vga adapter and found one, so i could hook it up to my 17 inch monitor, what power supply unit do you use for this? and is there anything else i would need to get my jamma boards working.

One thing to remember with selecting your power supply is that some boards require -5v which is *not* on newer ATX power supplies. Not all games need it. CPS2 needs it if you want Stereo QSOUND output. I think you can do mono out without -5v. Mortal Kombat and other Midway boards tend to need -5v. NeoGeo is very popular so I figure I should mention it *doesn't* need -5v.

Video is another tricky concern again depending on the games you want to run. Once again Midway boards including Mortal Kombat do not run at anything close to US consumer TV refresh rates. So depending on your TV or monitor you may have sync problems with certain boards.

Then you also need to think about how you will handle extra/non-standard buttons. Every game could have it's own additional button harness. If you're doing a Control Panel + Supergun in one box that might be easier. You could just connect each kick harness however you prefer to your buttons and run them out with the JAMMA connector.

It's really not that hard to make a Supergun that works. You just need the harness and then to connect all the components to it. CPS2Shock had a guide about making a supergun as well. If you have access to a display that is 15khz and accepts analog RGB like an arcade monitor or SCART RGB capable TV it's even easier. I'm not aware of how well VGA converters works but I did use the JROK once. The quality with composite is not very good, S-Video is probably alot better. But if you can get RGB or do RGB->Component that's probably much better. Remember to avoid digital displays, i.e. HDTVs. They are crap.

The vga converters work but they are not the best image out there and for $30 don't expect the best just fine.

ok I have made my mind up and I am going to just build one from scratch. I will buy a new arcade power supply for about $40 get the rgb to vga conveter for about $30, might be more $40? get the fully wired jamma harness, I have all the buttons and joysticks, i'm also going to need the db15 male's and females for the joystick connections, anything else?

update: my ATX power supply's got the -5 volts white wire so this will save me some cash, and I like that.

Consider the question of if you want removable joystick controllers or if you want and all in one/control panel type of unit. It would save you needing to use "DB15" connectors if it's built in controls. You can also decide if you want this Supergun to have boards that sit ontop of it, to the side of it, or even have somewhere inside of it to place boards. Again it helps if you have a good idea of what boards you intend to play.

well I would like to have a separate control panel with two controllers and buttons on it, I say this because I would like to build other controllers for other games, like a trackball controller or just a simple 4 way stick for others, I am thinking of having the boards sit on top for now, later on I might make a mini cab and house it all in making a little arcade machine that won't take up a lot of room. I have so many idea's, but for now something simple just to get started.

Just remember to take your time and always double check your wiring. And hopefully you have a common/cheap game to test with. Don't test the SG for the first time with some rare expensive board just incase.

Yeah closest thing to the arcade experience is RGB>component on an SD CRT for boards near NTSC standard. Then no scaling is involved, 15khz all the way through.
Plus lets you use a supergun with SCART instead of needing its own encoder.

I have only just been able to order my converter and jamma harness this weekend, had some home stuff to deal with, I am also wanting to buy a single arcade speaker for about $5, but I can not find anywhere that tells me how to connect the speaker directly to the harness? any advice?
