http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/09/20/news_6133941.html Looks like he is already planning a new game, too...
Daikatana 2 wouldn't be too bad if Romero used the Doom 3/Source engine instead of delaying the game to the point where the technology itself has been surpassed quite a bit.
I met Romero, and had dinner with him at a convention a few years back. He's a fun guy to hang around with. He's really extroverted compared to John Carmack.
"When news of my new game somehow gets out, I think everyone will be a bit shocked." What, a re-release of Daikatana?
A little o/t, but I have an old preview of Daikatana I've been meaning to upload to Fabrizo's FTP, if anyone wants to read it (once I get it up there, that is). I've always seen Romero as a bit arrogant, but then again I've never met the man.
I think its about time people stop bashing John Romero with Daikatana at every oppertunity. Yeah, it wasn't very good but people are still moaning about it every time the subject of a game by John Romero is brought up.
Just remember what he did at ID Software, the man is a god to me. I've met Romero and Stevie (<3) and both are really nice people. Carmack is a bit hardcore to talk to, well he was at qcon anyway.
Ion Storm definitely made up for it: Deus Ex. Romero had nothing to do with it, but I worship that game. As for Daikatana, I may be giving it a first play tonight. I've never played the game before.
Has anyone seen this? Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement? http://www.johnromero.com/games_ddici.htm It made me a fan! I've been a huge fan of Commander Keen and the Apogee games since it originally came out, and reading some history on it was great! The hacking around with EGA in ways never done before and using Mario 3 graphics to test the engine... then recreating Mario 3's first level on the PC, approaching Nintendo... it's the type of story I'll be telling fifteen years down the road. Hell, I've already lived similar experiences... The only difference being that I still love the game company I work for and they appreciate my hacking around, so I've got no plans to leave and start an 'id' of my own *for the unreleased game fanatics, you can download DDici off that site... almost like a really really early version of Commander Keen *
Yeah, we should wait and see what John has planned. No need to shoot the guy down before he even takes off. Was Daikatana really that bad? I never played this game, but all this talk makes me want to find a copy. ^_^_^
I played it for a few minutes two nights ago. The pre-alpha available for download plays similar to the final game, unfortunately. I'm going to play it more when I get the chance, because I hear it gets better once you get past the first area.
