In 1996, Atari started work on a Beavis & Butt-Head arcade game. It tested poorly, was never completed and few of the 12 prototype machines were believed to be alive and obtainable. Until Galloping Ghost Arcade got their hands on one and got it working again. Built using 3DO-based hardware and incomplete at the time of its cancellation, the cabinet—#9 of 12—has been repaired and is now part of the Chicago arcade’s collection. Bizarrely, because of the weird hardware the game was built on, they actually had to go out and buy an old 3DO console to get the parts they needed. While it’s not the only surviving version of the game, it’s thought to be the only one that’s going to be regularly playable in an arcade. You can see an older video—likely taken at one of the other cabinet’s regular appearance at the California Arcade Experience—of Beavis & Butt-Head in action below. From; Galloping Ghost Arcade on Wednesday For those that missed the LIVE stream last night, we added another LOST Prototype arcade game to the floor! Beavis and Butthead! It was being worked on by Atari in 1996 when it was cancelled. Huge thanks to Jeremy Fox of Prince Arcades for finding this one and opting to have it go on floor for everyone to enjoy rather than sell it to a collector to be locked away. When we received the cabinet, its proprietary CD drive was not working and the game was completely dead. The drive had an odd ribbon cable we'd not seen before. The jamma based PCB looked to be in very nice shape as did the entire cabinet. The CDs would not recognize in a PC so we were unsure of their functionality. The cabinet was very clean and contained the original sales documentation stating it was sold at an MTV auction in 1999 and was one of only 12 made. I'm certain not all 12 are still in existence any more. Our is Prototype #9. While the game would not start, when the reset button in the cabinet was pressed, a 3DO logo would display. That sparked the idea to go do a little research on the 3DO. It quickly looked like the drive in the old Panasonic 3DO used the same cable. We went out the next day and found a used 3DO and opened it up. Taking the drive out and just connecting it to the PCB did not start the drive properly. So we put the drive back in the 3DO and let the Power go from the 3DO to the drive and the data cable go to the Beavis and Butthead PCB. Moments later Seth Young and I heard the incredibly recognizable music of the Beavis and Butthead theme song. Now it is available for all to play! Keep an eye out as we will be posting a full release video and full play through video. We also have a second CD we will try soon as well. It could be the original concept disc of the game that was just a series of mini games! I hope they dumped the game
[laughing] [laughing harder] They should like... huhuhhuh, dump it Yeah! Dump it! Huhuhhuh Spoiler I'm glad this was found. Hopefully more show up
Wow, I really like the style they went with, a sort of 3D beat em up. It actually looks really interesting.
They took the machine to Midwest Gaming Classic 2016 this weekend, it's in the larger room in the basement. I wish I would have realized it was so rare when I walked past it twice.
That's probably from the episode where they wore eye patches as a jock strap. Only a show devoid of logic could come up with that.
Emulator - 100% after it will be released. Unmodified home console - highly unlikely. Unless some 3DO wizard with godlike skills will hack the game to accept console input. Game was designed with JAMMA in mind so it will ignore your gamepad. Other released 3DO arcade games, for example Orbatak prototype can't be played on home consoles for the same reason, even if you rebuild and sign iso or hack the BIOS to allow to run unsigned code.
I had no idea this was developed using 3DO hardware, very cool. Good job getting it back in working condition, Galloping Ghost Arcade! Hope to be able to enjoy this via MAME some day
I talked to the guy who works at the arcade that got this and they did not dump the game. I don't think they even tried yet. Its a damn shame. Its just a matter of time before someone accidentally breaks it or it wears out.
Just like Galloping Ghost arcade. I thought it was cool enough that they managed to get Primal Rage II, but Beavis & Butt-Head? Cool beans!
