Supposedly the rarest regularly released 3DO game - or at least the most sought after. Original Japanese title is Sword & Sorcery, it was also released for Sega Saturn in Japan. Anybody have any idea what a copy will run you these days? Also, any ideas on the print run?
Couldn't tell you about the print run, but I do know that this game isn't nearly as rare as everybody thinks it is. The main issue is that the game was packaged in a generic case with 'Panasonic Interactive Media' on the CD label spine. The manual and front art was perfectly distinctive, but having the generic label on the side meant that many copies were lost among the crappy FMV and sex games. If you see a pile of 3DO stuff in the store, ask politely if you can paw through the stack of CDs to find it. When I was hunting for Lucienne's Quest in 2003, I found one copy in every Gamers store in Omaha. The one I got cost me $15, and I imagine that one with the cardboard slipcase would run about $40. Interestingly, Sword and Sorcery on the Saturn includes fully spoken dialogue for all the character portrain interaction scenes. The 3DO version has no spoken dialogue to go with the translated English text, presumably to save money on localization. If you're fluent in Japanese, the Saturn game is more satisfyingly interactive in both sound and graphics. It's also easier to find.
Wow, if the Saturn version is better than the 3DO version must be very bad because the saturn version is a mess I think. I found that all of the RPG games by Micocabin where awful graphically. Riglord Saga 1 and 2 plus Sord & Sorcery. It looks as if they all use the same game engine. Yakumo
Yeah, the Saturn version was a port of the 3DO game and it suffers for it. If they had coded it from the ground up with the Saturn's capabilities in mind, the 3D terrain and the character sprites might have been more pleasant to look at. Those shortcomings aside, I still think this is one of the better examples of the graphical potential of the 3DO. It's a real shame that there wasn't an ongoing effort to max out the hardware, but there was no time or space in the gaming market to support that.
Gamefan reviewd the 3DO version in the day and rekkoned it crapped on the saturn version from a great height.
Gamefan and EGM were both full of shit as well. The only thing either of those mags was good far were screen shots of Japanese imports. Yakumo
Isn't Gamefan's bias against the Saturn well-documented at this point? I'm sure that the campaign against Night Trap was part of a big organized anti-competitive effort and not just a one-off smear job. Anyway, I have both games, I've played through them both, the Saturn one is better to look at and better to listen to. I don't know if the 3DO version was released in the JPN region and if it still included the voices, but even if it did the graphical comparison would still stand.
In the US region? Guardian War is one I know of, with some tactical-based combat a la Shining Force. The American-developed RPGs are mostly first-person dungeon crawls in the style of Elder Scrolls, stuff like Dragon Lore and Slayer.
Thanks guys. I was fairly certain there weren't any other rpg's close to the traditional turn based style like Lucienne's Quest in the US. I'm not to big on the dungeon crawler games, with the exceptions of things like Ultima Underworld, and Phantasy Star. The Japan side is the one I'm most curious about. Blue Forest Monogatari has me interested. Seems hard to find any info or sceenshots on it using english spelling though.
Wish I could, but i'm on a tight budget currently, after going a bit overboard during the holiday season :crying:
