    Hi all,

Friend has a Macbook (intel based) less than a year old. interestingly, it now fails to boot os x. Justs sits at a white screen. We gave a live cd ubuntu a shot, which booted fine, however, it stated the mac's hdd was un-mountable which leads me to believe bad sector?

Gave the "disk utility" a shot on the os x installer disc, no dice either

Anyone have any idea's whats the culprit. at this point, even retreving some of the data would be best

Sorry for the lack of info, just not a whole lot to go on!

Is it the original hard drive that's in the laptop? A seagate in a Macbook can cause major issues so I've heard.

Best option to retrieve data is to whack in a new HD and then hook up the faulty drive on a sata to USB connector.

I dont know how macs work, but does it let you access the BIOS? In there you should be able to see if it is a Seagate HDD or something else. If it is a seagate, then try to get a hold of Seagate's diagnostic program. Look for the 'DOS' version that can be put on a CD or if they have a mac version, get it, just make sure you can boot off a CD or floppy. Run the diagnostic on it and see if it tests out ok.

if it was purchased within a year, it should still be under the warranty right? i'd just take it to your nearest apple store if that's the case.

mmm true, but were a fair bit away from an apple store.

Tried to boot into the open-firmware terminal with cmd-opt-O-F at boot, but no dice, i wonder, maybe a pmu issue?...though that wouldn't explain why ubuntu would boot...

    puzzling...

    edit** pmu reset did nothing....

Well I could always send you my macbook 60gb HD which I have spare after an upgrade, it's only a 3 months old and not worth selling, would only ask postage costs from the UK.

My iBook 60Gb HDD (original) died the other day (Friday) and stuck in an OSX OS disc, ran the repair utilities. Got it up and running again, however the HDD was a bit humped so just replaced it over the weekend. Very straight forward. Follow the advice about backing it up.

friend went down to an apple store today, turned out the entire disk failed. Oddly, tech guy responded that they had recieved 5 other macbooks this week from disk failures!

    ...oh well....

    Thanks for the help!

Phate responded to some link-spam left by one of a few new accounts that have been cruising through random threads dropping their turds. The mods have since been in and cleaned up, so the original spam is no more.

For the record... Intel Macs don't use Open Firmware.
