Just when things couldn't get any worse for me some bitch steals my Macbook. Because I have been too poor to afford any kind of back up medium, I have lost hundreds of photographs, personal files and very valuable source code. I've registered the serial number with the police and Apple but I'm not holding out hope. I also have the Mac address of the laptop...can anything be done with it?
Nothing that i can think of. If your lucky and she has the passwords to your computer or and computer logs in to one of your accounts you might be able to get the IP address and give that to the police.
This sucks. I know those "things can't possibly get any worse now" situations. You are in my prayers.
I know the feeling. My laptop was at the wrong place at the wrong time and was seized in a police warrant. Gone are years of my school work, pictures, and so on. Now in case of theft I have a password set so you can't begin POST without it and encryption on the drive making the whole shebang worthless except for parts. The former is rather weak and the latter strong so at least my data is safe.
yeah. I was in the same boat as you. House got burglarized and they took my laptop. It did have personal info and was not encrypted. So far, nothing strange has popped up, but I did change all of my passwords since then. Now on my new laptop I have the BIOS password protected, so it won't POST until after you insert the password AND I have my HDD encrypted. Making the laptop useless incase it is stolen again by someone who doesn't know what they're doing.
sorry, but it's too easy to change a laptops mac address. if the person who stole your notebook isn't dumber than shit you possibly don't have a chance to get it back :/ i'm sorry for you mate!
Person who stole it is stupid most likely. Check the local pawn shops, etc. Try to remote log into the laptop if you have that feature. I would get a pal with a notebook and see if the wireless in your laptop shows up within a few blocks of your place. Odds are you know the thief.
Also, try local classified ads, etc. This is usually what will happen. Someone will try to sell it locally.
So far I've checked pawn shops, cash converters, Australian ebay and gumtree. She was another back packer so there is a chance she's jumped on the bus to the next city. She was interested in a guy from Melbourne so it's probably there by now. I couldn't give a stuff about the laptop itself I just want my photographs and source code back. I have a duplicate of my hard drive back in england but it's only current until november which is when I left. So all of my travelling photos are gone. Even though I now have a part time job, my main income is solely reliant on app sales and without a mac I can't update anything or make new software, after this months pay from apple it's back to just getting by on minimum wage which is a struggle as a traveller. Maybe time to consider a netbook hackintosh until I can raise some cash. It's my birthday next week, maybe my parents will be generous but I severely doubt it
