Sorry for your loss Webjeff,:crying: What I would do is contact the police and get them to ask around the area if they saw anyone unual in the area at the time and I would take the advice of the other member that posted don't trust anyone and my advice watch everthing like a hock specially these day. These sorts of scumbags don't deserve any empathy and are uaual roaming all over the place looking for that sort that opportunity. I hope you get it back, good luck!
my friend won an auction for his own cellphone which was stolen two weeks before, he then sued the guy. you see, worth a try. check ebay, craigslist etc.!
Did you make a fuss about it at work? If not, you should. Someone might have seen something. Or possibly it was a poorly made joke? I would probably quit from a job where someone did that shit for real. Who wants to work in a place where people openly steal stuff from you like that? I guess the economy makes one less picky, but even so. Sorry Jeff. I hope it turns up.
The thing about this though is companies aren't suppose to give out that kind of information for legal reasons. You'll have to go around shops trying to find it, and if you do, you'll have to go to the police and they'll have to go and ask for the information. I've had a couple of situations similar at work where people try to sell stolen stuff.
Yeah, you'd have to locate it and put a deposit down on it to ensure the shop didn't just sell it before the Police could turn up. Either that or just explain to the owner of the store, take the box along and show the MAC address. He may however think it's an elaborate con. First guy sells him a Macbook, then second guy claims it is stolen after money has been handed over!
Thanks guys, Yea, I've been watching ebay and craigslist like crazy. I have been emailing local radio stations and news places just to get the word out (if possible). I should check local pawn shops too. No, no one at work did anything, I am 100% sure because they were all in the same room and we are all good friends. I know from the outside, it might look like they might have, but I am 100% positive that's not the case. These guys have paid me back lunches I bought for them months ago that I didn't even remember. Just keep an eye on your stuff too. Let my loss be a warning for my friends here at Assembler to keep an eye on your stuff. If I can prevent a loss for you guys because this made you buy that security lock, then I'll feel better. I won't give up, but I'm sure it's probably gone. One thing I did leave installed was my aim, which I think should start right up on startup, so if they login it will boot me out at home. That's one thing I haven't seen yet... So, I dunno if this guy is smart and hasn't even logged into the system or maybe I didn't auto start it. Either way, I'm waiting. I still think its a solicitor and believe me, I have words to say to any people coming in the office again trying to sell stuff (OR DROP STUFF OFF) even though we have a no solicitor sign up. Jeff.
Most likely it was an in/out thing. Did they leave the power adapter? You should find your location on google maps and type in "pawn shop", and go to them all. If you find the item there, don't say a word, just call the local police. Make sure you filled out the theft report. Also, did you buy this on charge? Most have basic theft protection, you just need a police report. Last resort, sue the building owner for not having proper security. (However I would not do this unless there was a promise of security)
Assembler, I did file a report with the police. They also said they'd beef up security in the area. I still have the reciept on me, which also had the serial number which was good. Unfortunately, I paid in cash (with a check card). I don't know if my bank will do anything, probably not. I'm still finding out from my parents if by any chance, their insurance with cover any of it. I still am trying to find out from my boss too. However, no one wants to take the blame so we'll see. I'm trying though! Jeff.
just one advince : if you still have the box of the notebook prolly the mac addres ad the serial number are printed on it, im 100% sure someday some1 will connect this machine to internet and will update the os with some patch from apple servers, i would call apple and tell them what happened, its really possible they can trace it ... I would love to see this guy owned
Not sure if the following story is true or if it is possible in you case but have a look at this - http://gizmodo.com/389115/stolen-macbook-victim-uses-screen-sharing-and-isight-to-bust-thieves
Man, I just ordered a MBP... I'm excited as shit on a stick, to imagine it'd be swiped within 2 days?!?! Holy crap. I feel for you dude and seriously hope you get some justice... sincerely! The shit people won't steal... we came back into work one Monday to find someone had come in over the weekend and stole a HP Laserjet 8150!!!!! That's like a 2 man job! WTF goes through the minds of these people!??!?! Anyway, GL dude...
That's a good one. I work in a school and we have loads of thin client terminals around the class rooms. After a holiday we found one had gone missing from an IT room. I would love to see the look on their face, they must have thought it was a pc with Windows 2003, office2007 and a heap load of other software, all the size of a dual cd case. when all they got was a little box with some sockets on it:icon_bigg
man at my school some kids broke in and stole computer wall projectors (3 of them) 3 computers and other stuff but our school is a vocational school with lots of equiptment so they have cameras like crazy! we eventually caught teh guys but they were only 12 wtf we couldnt even arrest them. us student had to help becuase our personal computers got stolen
Sounds like this a**wipe might have taken it, he saw the opportunity, pretty brazen of him though.
Well, technically they can't be arrested but... If one of them should happen to run into a wall by accident... <Evil Grin>
Webjeff, You could post a reward for it and you might get it back or maybe some information from somebody who knows something. If you see it in the pawnshop, phone the police rightway! They will come down. There are rules pawnshops have to follow and if they don't they can be prosecuted or even sued!
