I'm thinking of building a cart using this hack of SMW:
    http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/42/

One problem I have is that my chip burner only does up to 8Mbit, so I am limited to that chip size for the moment. My plan is to use 2 x 27c801's and although I think I've worked out how everything needs to be wired up I'm not too sure about writing the file to the eprom. I know I will need to strip the header but does it need to be interleaved or can I just split the file into 2 x 1024KB chunks?

Donor cart I am planning to use:

Also any other SMW hacks that work on real hardware that I could squeeze into 16Mbit?

Ok, so maybe I didn't really research my donor cart enough before cutting, turns out I thought it was a LoRom cart but was actually a HiRom, so that meant I instead of 4 wires I ended up with a few more :-(

Plus on top of that it has a MAD-1 address decoder rather than a 74LS139 meant more cutting and jumpering, but at least it works!

You should try to not solder on the cartridge connector pads directly.
Or in the rare cases where you don't have the choice to do it in an other way (with vias or even traces), at least try to scrap the green varnish from the upper part of the pad and put solder only where some green was.

Yeah, this was a bit of a balls up if I'm totally honest. I didn't notice I'd used the wrong donor cart until I had both EPROMs soldered down, was p*ssed off so I got a bit 'chop happy' and just cut all the lines from 40-48.

Plus the tip on my iron at the time wasn't exactly slender (I know, excuses, excuses).

Plus I didn't realise I could of burnt "Return to Dinosaur Land" rather than 2nd Reality, which looks to be the better game.

Still, learning things all the time and I'm getting better at it each time. Here's a pic of all the ones I done so far:

The top two are the first couple I did, where I wasn't too sure about anything so basically wired up everything. Middle and bottom left are socketed HiRom/LoRom carts that are a lot tidier. Bottom right is a Super Tetris 3 that I did a good job on but then it didn't like the large SRAM (thought it was being run on a copier) so I slapped a copy of wires on and never got around to tidying it up.

Just waiting for a Derby Stallion 3 to turn up which is either going to be a LttP: Parallel Worlds or SMW: Return to Dinosaur Land.
