I'm about to start a project that requires me to build a tray-loaded (front face ejectable) GD-ROM reader. I'm less interested in a slot-in solution, but that would do in a pinch. Due to the specifics if the GD-drive I will probably have to make a sleigh as in the HKT-0120. Or possibly use just the plastic bits from a PC sleigh and rise the DC drive from below when the disk is in. The latter might would probably be doable but with zero margin since the container for my project is 40mm and the unmodified GD stand is about 32mm. Has anyone seen a similar project for anything that I could steal ideas from? (I have a broken HKT-0120 that I could scavenge the GD-sleigh from, but it serves better as a spare part in case I break the GD in another HKT-0120.)
Some old PC CD drives have that laser lens(spu3200), maybe it can work by modifying the GD drive mainboard, I set aside one for that future project.
That would make an interesting future project, but for this one the goal is minimal hardware changes besides moving things around and extending some cables. It's going to be my reference machine for testing, so I don't want to introduce any extra error sources.
I think some people have attempted this and a few people actually got it done http://modsbywerd.blogspot.co.uk/2009/03/gd-drive-slimming.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yruN_oTKSH0 I also seem to remember someone used a imac cd drive unit to make a very slim slot load type but cannot find pictures (its not the imac shell dreamcast mod easily found online) good luck
That one is really well done. I wouldn't be able to fit his particular mod in my container, but it's a great reference. Thanks!
You wouldn't be thinking of this would you? This mod uses a imac slot loading drive for the base parts.
