Looking into making a mame unit for my house, hoping to have a touch screen based unit. I have no idea where to get started. Which is the best front end for it? Is it better to go with an XP based unit or with Linux? Has anyone converted a cab on here and can offer general bit of advice?
The OS isn't that importent for MAME use (the front ends look about the same) . I would take the linux mechine for the reduce price and the better memory useage ( cause there are still other applications that run while you play). Anyway might I ask what are the computer specs (seeings as mame isn't really over demending I tend to think most people buy an over powered PC for MAME use only )
i agree and building a jamma connection for a xbox is quite straight forward, it is better trying to use a debug board or at least one with a 128mb upgrade, as a stock xbox does struggle with the 64mb memory restraints Also on the xbox you have the mame emulator, which is pretty damed good, as well as the finalburn one which supports cps1/2 and neogeo games very effectively
The xbox is good if you want the major games but some games ( good games) will not work on the xbox ( though XBOX games will work so thats a big plus!) Anyway I rather have my xbox as a media center then an arcade
The computer will be a 3500+ AMD with 4gig ram which I have spare. I would prefer Linux based over windoz ( I hate it with a passion ). There is a good chance it will also end up being a server to the house too.
Windows is too much of a hassle to get legal. Ive had 2 copy's of XP turn bad. Then XP Media center with my New computer slowed so bad it was unusable. So I stick to Linux. With Ubuntu/Mint I have yet to have anything big go wrong. Even if it did I would just copy the home folder and re-install since it only take 20 min...
