I was just wondering what the current file size is for a full Mame rom set would be. I know that since nobody here would have anything like Mame on their computer (Because that would be wrong :)) if anyone could ask a friend of a friend of a friend that knows somebody I'd be appreciative.

  2. Like every dumped MAME ROM, even the partially or non-emulated ones? I've no clue, but I'd imagine the size would be something like Holy Shit Gigabytes.

In all seriousness, I honestly have no clue, but I bet if you were to seek out the latest GoodMAME set you could get an idea. Though to be honest, I'm not sure why anyone would want a full Mame set - you'd be swimming in clones, alternate regional versions, and some games that are better left unemulated, if only for the quality - or lack thereof. ;)

I was just curious because I was reading the latest game list on the official MAME site and while they're not all working yet I noticed some of the newer games have to be taking some space on the old hardrive.

    MAME ROMS

    Hi Everyone:

If you want to know how big of the MAME ROMS. I can tell you, it contains 10 DVD, it means 4.7GB X 10 = 47GB. I need to purchase the bigger harddisk to store these roms.

On the other hand I also need to upgrade my computer performance because MAME can emulate SEGA Model 3, my exist computer seem not enough power to run Model 3 games.

  5. Damn, that is a lot!

Although it does make a lot of sense - there have been more and more games dumped recently that run from a hard drive or CD-ROM, so those are really going to blow up the amount. I know Area 51, with it's 1GB hard drive image, has been dumped, as well as several of the original Beatmania mixes, that all run from a CD-ROM.

Even some of the later ROM games (esp. Neo Geo and CPS2) are hella big - Metal Slug 3 is like 60MB, and you do have to remember all the ROMs are zipped!

With some of the newer 3D games, though - there aren't actually any PCs on the market that are powerful enough to emulate them at the moment. Well that's what they said when they got Cruisin' USA working, and that was a while ago - I dunno if it's still true today - haven't been keeping up with MAME's progress recently, but the Sega Model 3's pretty damn sophisticated! I highly doubt any PC could run Sega Rally 2 full speed... maybe some kick-ass dual Xeon? I don't think MAME can use 2 processors though...

You could probably make the set a lot smaller if you just get the ROMs - no CD or HDD images - and smaller again if you don't include the pointless clones/revisions/hacks (there are some that make the games quite different though).

mame is just pure single cpu so only the fasted thing you can buy runs good enough =)

btw. cuisin world is the only game that runs fast enough to be playable, except maybe some tekken or soul caliber games that run in nearly slowmotion on my athlon 2.5ghz =)

  8. I've got the original Dead Or Alive running around ~15FPS on my Pentium III - proof that 3d games are getting better. But yeah, Zilog Jones also posted a good point - the SNK games, at least, can be freaking huge. It's a good thing most newer emulators let you run from a zipped file.

47gb??? Your set must contain redundant ROMs if you have an efficient set, I think it's far under 20gb. I believe Emuchina's set is around 25gb and it's redundant!

Hmm, from the ROMset burners I've seen, it's 10 DVDs too. You sure they aren't including hdd or CD images or something?

10 DVDs includes CHDs. Yes it is that big.

ROMs aren't much use without the CHDs, guys!!!

True but CHDs didn't exist until 2003 and they weren't officially a part of the set until like last year. Most games with hard drives aren't exactly emulated well anyways, I sure don't have them.

My full MAME32 0.95 set is under 40GiB. And that's with every CHD too.
