Protect Me Knight (Mamotte Knight), the new game from Ancient Corp, is availiable on Xbox Live Indie Games. I need to say the music is composed by Yuzo Koshiro? http://www.ancient.co.jp/~game/mamotte_knight/index.html Go and buy it!
See they excellently got bad american box art correct http://www.ancient.co.jp/~game/mamotte_knight/en.html If only it came as a limited edition set with a fake FC cartridge, floppy disc, artbook, straps, mini figures, etc....
ha! I wish the Famicom could handle that much action on screen with no slow down. They have far surpassed the sprite-size/number limitations as well. I have mixed feelings regarding its feeling of "authenticity". That said, most people won't notice the things I m talking about =/
I thought it was so funny the way the US version has the shit box art. So right in every respect. Did you know that there's a PC demo of the game if you click on the floppy at the Japanese version of the site.
If they were going for authenticity in all respects they'd do better just writing some Famicom emulator. Pretty sure this is 8-bit in theme only.
I for one whish they'd move away from 8bit and give us quality 16bit. you know, such as he likes of Super Contra on the Super Famicom. Konami sort of got it right with their Gradius Re-Birth. that looked like a jazzed up Super Famicom game. Yakumo
Contra Rebirth and Castlevania Rebirth also kick ass=) 8bit art is really easy to make though, you can eve use mspaint for all your sprites=p
Too bad we can't have his babii... Err yea the game looks cool, but I agree let's have more 16-bit goodness.
Some people say it only works on japanese windows. I beat the game yesterday on Easy. On normal it's too dificulty to me :crying:
I've yet to try it but when I do I'll give it a shot on my laptop since that's from Canada and running an English version of XP. My desk top is 100% Japanese though. Yakumo
If these retro-minded developers want total authenticity for their products, why don't they just start programming again under actual 8-bit hardware conditions? I'm sure if there were enough titles being made in this nature a company such as Nintendo would happily mass produce a few cartridges. Better yet, I dream of the day when there's a new game pressed disc bearing the official Saturn ring of protection! After all, there are still occasional Megadrive releases now and then...
^I guess some consider it tricky and inconvenient ... and much prefer working on hardware with less restrictions and better tools. Not to mention the flexibility of having built a proper framework for things on a new platform rather than relying on some weirdo half-breed emulation. Of course, it would've been nice if something like Megaman 9-10 were actually pulled off on actual hardware... (and didn't take up the odd amount of probably over 500x the amount of data as some of the NES era ones ever did.) 80s! 80s!!! PROTECT ME KNIGHT! The English art is awesome, but what I can't help but wonder is whether or not the in-game English is intentional or not. The tutorial text has some really hilarious word choices and odd translations. I honestly can't tell whether they were done by someone who doesn't speak English very well or if they were intentionally made the way they are. The lack of flicker and slowdown doesn't bother me in originals made to look retro (but it sure would've been nice if it was optional). But as far as noticing such things goes; bet you love the WiiWare release of Final Fantasy IV - The After Years... with its disgusting and style-breaking text windows, horrible widescreen implementation, and the dreadful use of FFIV-FFV era 16x16 background tiles mixed with 16x24(?) sprites (FFIV-FFV battle sprites or FFVI sprites in general) ... not to mention the sprite edits...
