Having a specific item doesn't count as a feasible way to avoid an item, especially if it's an item you'll never get when running up front. Besides, since the lighting bolt comes out of nowhere, you can't even time the star properly.

I've been playing quite a bit and really enjoying it. It's like MK7 on a big screen with a few more items and characters. New tracks are always welcome except Rainbow Road is a bit underwhelming..

150cc is kicking me in the face constantly. Of course I'm going for 3 stars in all cups but it gets tricky when they smack you with items quite regularly. Often near the last corner on the last lap. At least the new horn item can get rid of the blue shells! Still, don't get it too often. Online is great fun.

True that on the 150cc. Getting the 3 stars is harder than I expected, mainly because they don't let you re-try individual courses on Grand Prix. Not positive but IIRC previous games let you do this. I know MK64 let you. Just a little frustrating when you get 1st on the first three races and get clobbered on the four race.

I am really pleased to see that instead of the AI being cheap (although the sharp-shooter green-shell observation is absolutely true,) they will take all the short cuts to win. They're smarter as opposed to more powerful. Good to see the wild rubberband AI of MK64 is no longer the way to make the game challenging, although MK64 is still my second favorite MK.

Also, pretty positive the weapon distribution is based on your actual location in respect to other players as opposed to just your rank. This saves MK8 from having the same problems as MKWii. You'd have someone in 8th get a Bullet Bill right behind about 4 or 5 players, obliterate them, then go steal first in the last second. Actually, I've noticed the Bullet Bills are WAY less common now.

You know what we should do? Set up our own Tournament on Mario Kart 8. Call is AssemblerGames or something. That'd be cool.

I completely agree. That's partially what I wanted to do with this thread. Happy someone else is on board. I don't believe I'd have time until tonight to do that. Any way you'd mind setting that up, Atomizer? Unless we should wait for more people or whatnot. I'm going to add everyone from the Wii U owner's list thread when I get time tonight.

    OK, i'll set it up.

Name is ASSEMblerGames . The Icon is a racing flag. I have to choose the rules..

Mode - 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, Mirror Grand Prix or battle?
Do you want CPU's? easy medium hard?
Active - Daily (set to be active all day and night; 24 hours) with no race limit?
We can set it to private, and have it require a code to join, or we can set it to public?

EDIT: Never mind, i've set it up. ASSEMblerGames is good to go!

What rules did you set everything under, Atomizer?

Shit... you can't edit it or close it once its been created. What the hell... lol. I stupidly managed to put "no CPU". So, if theres not enough people on it, then there wont be a race..

It's on 150cc, active all the time.

EDIT: So, I created a new one.... same name... with CPU's on. I'll contact nintendo and see if they'll close the other one.

EDIT: Ah! I get it. The tournament only works if I give out the code! It's all good!

    Here's the code - 3382-2120-7696

That was one of the best things about the original SNES version. The 3 lives thing was great. I gave up trying to get 3 stars on one cup in MK7 because I'd get beat in the last race every time without fail.

Tournament is a cool idea! I'll check it out later tonight. :)

I know this is now a really old thread, but hopefully its okay if I bump it. If not I apologize.

A few of us will be playing Mario Kart 8 tomorrow (2/25/2015) around 4:00pm EST/9:00pm GMT. If you'd like to join in, just throw a post including your NNID here or send one of us a PM! To join the tournament set up, utilize the code 3382-2120-7696. Hopefully some of you will be able to join in!

EDIT: If anybody would like to start earlier than 4:00pm EST/9:00pm GMT, just keep me posted. I have the day free until like 6:30-ish, so I'm more than willing to hop on early.
