And he owns a restaurant on Crete..

    :-D

Me and my Girlfreind went to Rethymnon on Crete this summer, and had ourselves a merry old Gin-and-tonics-drinking-in-the-sun time :drinkers:

This guy on the picture had a restaurant called Manoli's place (Mario's place) and even had a Mario sign hanging outside of it.
I thought you guys might enjoy this bit of sillyness.. And thats me on the right ;-) Sorry about the poor quality of the picture, it's a normal photografi scanned to my computer..

By the way, when we went shopping I came by this little old toyshop and there I found a Mastersystem to game gear converter, which I grabbed for 5 euros (about 5 dollars i think).
I also picked up a weird atari 2600 clone, called (ready for this?..)
The Rambo Tv Game system :smt033
The box has a very crude cut out picture of rambo on it, and the screenshot on the back feature games from gamboy b/w to genisis games.. But the most funny part of it is that the only txt that comes with it, is a sheet of paper written in arabic!? could this be an arabic clone? LOL

I heard about the Mario story. If I remember correctly, it was some fat guy named mario who owned a warehouse that NOA used for storage, etc.

From what I heard Mario was in fact made up by Shigery Miyamoto, and they picked the moustache because it was easier to draw than a mouth, given the limited resolution.

If I remember correctly....Miyamoto invented Jumpman (Mario in Donkey Kong ^_^) who was later named Mario because he resembled somebody at NoA who was called Mario.....

i got my story from a computer magazine i think it was EGM a special edition with a complete movelist to many combatgames (the orginal Killer instinct 1 to snes) and tekken 2 plus a hell of other combat games where they also told about the pong predessor (and many other myths and QA´s)
so that is where i know it is not a joke what i said.

(and no it was not the april issue)

the sad thing my sister threw them out and i am quite pissed today about it.

Yeah, it was they made the character first, with a hat because that was easier to do than hair, and the "mustache" is supposed to be a smile (but ended up looking more like a mustace.) The Red/blue overalls combination was chosen becasue they contrast well.

"Mario" was a guy who worked at a Nintendo wherehouse in New York or something and looked like the character, so he got the honor.

exact , that's the real story. and mario was named jumpman before being renamed as mario , like someone aid earlier.

the moral of this story: bad resolution and a guy named mario can make a classic character that everyone know and love. great story isn't it? :)

Hawanja- You are much welcome to add it to your database (cool site..) let me know if you need any specific info on it. Just be sure to credit me for it, thus insuring my eternal fame in the world of obscure consoles :smt033

Here's the pics as promised, you can all stop holding your breath now...

    The Rambo Tv Game!!!!!

Found by me at an old toystore (called dumbo If i Remember right)
on Crete. At the cost of 5 euro..

It has 36 build in games. Which you can switch between with a kind of reset button, that goes to the next game when you press it :smt023 The system itself looks pretty much like your standard atari, and follows the clone tradition of being light as a feather.. Really!.. Due to cheap plastic I have been told.
I had to get this system for the box! I love it.. :smt023
Only an A-team Tv game would have been better..

    Don't mess with this clone!

Watched an old documentary (Thumb Candy) which I transferred from VHS to DVD.

Shigeru Miyamoto made Jump Man/Donkey Kong to replace another game that was a failure Radarscope.

He chose Donkey as he had heard (allegedly) that Donkey in UK was slang for an idiot/moron (get the drift)

Jump man was re-named Mario after the owner of the Nintendo Warehouse Mario Segali.

Miyamoto drew a hat as with the limited power he couldn`t make his hair flow/move.

He gave him red overalls and blue shirt so that you could see the movement of his arms.....which wouldnt have been possible if all in one colour.

He gave him a moustache as he wouldnt have the graphic capabilities to draw a mouth/teeth.

There was also something about the white gloves......or am I thinking of Michael Jackson & Mickey Mouse :smt043

Awww mannn... that clone is awsome.

Some clones are boring, unimaginative, that one defintely is not. It makes me feel like a macho man jsut for looking at it.

I am definetely going to put those up- thank you Dark Helmet sir.

BTW light speed is too slow... we have to go straight to- LUDICROUS SPEED!

" Ludicrous Speed? I don't know if the ship can take it!"

" What's the matter Col. Sanders, CHICKEN?!!?!"
