Very nice match, I've never seen that one before. Only real specialty player I remember is the Omega Red player.

I've been watching some of your ranbats, glad to see people still play this game. It was actually quite refreshing to go back and watch some matches because it's been a while, it makes me realize how much I miss it. It's unique matches like these though that really are testament to how deep and filled with strategy the game really is.

Does MvC2 run in VGA mode on the DC?

I believe it does support VGA on DC or can be patched to work.

There are plenty of specialty players out there with very unique Mid/High tier assembled teams who are very prolific in the scene. Check youtube for personal favorite players like Mike Z, VDO, MagnusOld, Tenderloin and to some extent Romneto and ACE who also use Mid tier teams from time to time. You're sure to get a new perspective on the game once you see these guys and what they can do.

The game is not going to die anytime soon. Trust me on this.

Yes, the DC version fully supports VGA Hi res, like its NAOMI counterpart.

It does, with no boot disc or anything necessary. I'm not sure if the first MVC does.

Ha, that takes me back. Many years ago, I ended up exporting that custom pirate DC soundtrack to the Xbox version after getting sick of all the jazzercising. Finding some of those ADX/AFS tools (afslnk.exe rings a bell) used to be a huge pain in the ass. Then after finding the tools and repacking the AFS files right, I found out that the track sequence was totally different on Xbox. Fun stuff.

Recent footage posted just a few hours ago courtesy of GOFORBROKE. This set took place at #37 Reloaded, a tournament event that took place last November in SoCal which was dedicated to old school Capcom fighters. Perhaps one biggest gathering for the MvC2 scene in sometime.

Video is a casuals match between two of my favorite MvC2 players, Tenderloin (Guile/CapCom/Ken) vs Locdown (Sent/Stri/Doom). The first 3 matches alone are hypeworthy. Smooth Assassin MvC2 mix used her, great tunes that compliment all the insanity onscreen.

Nope, the arcade version runs at 240p. I played it recently in an arcade in Seattle, and I was able to confirm that. I didn't know that it can also run at 31khz, but that doesn't surprise me. The one I saw was definitely running at 240p, and I suspect that's how most systems were/are set up. It looks pretty good on VGA on the DC, but the downside of playing the game at that resolution is that, at least on a CRT, the character sprites look really blocky, since they have to be scaled to fit the screen. At 240p, the character sprites don't need to be scaled, so they don't look blocky. I don't mind playing on VGA, but I think I do prefer 240p. The monitor on the cab I was playing wasn't great, but I imagine on a nice display it would look really good.

I guess this is really only a concern if you're using a CRT. It would be cool if someone would make a modified version of MvC2 for DC with 240p support. It seems like it shouldn't be difficult to do, but I don't know exactly what it would require. A few other DC games run at that resolution, like Plasma Sword and Bangai-O, for example.

And so do other games on Dreamcast like World Impact and 3rd Strike (via code), but none of these games are NAOMI based ports.

How would the ports be ranked? It seems to be (from best to worst):

    1.) Dreamcast
    2.) PSN
    3.) Xbox
    4.) XBLA
    5.) PS2

The PS2 version is allegedly the worst of the original batch of ports.

It's hard to find detailed information about the Xbox version. It got a lot of scrutiny upon release (a 3.9/10 "Awful" from IGN) that made it look like a terrible port from the get go, but most of these reviewers only scored it so low for being late to market and lacking online play. I've put a lot of time into playing this port (direct boot from HDD over component) and it feels very solid. No slowdown, no choppy audio (there may be additional character glitches not found in the DC version). Load times were on average much better than the Dreamcast version, though comparing direct HDD load times to GD-ROM times isn't exactly fair (I'd like to compare the DC version under more optimized circumstances, perhaps SD card + VGA)

The XBLA version is allegedly the weaker of the new batch of ports (off-timing & slowdown).

One of my favourite players to watch is Josh 360. There's nothing like watching good old top tier matches, but the skill involved when converting into Iron Man's infinite from different positions on screen is something to be admired. This was an awesome tournament to watch over all.

    Arcade
    Dreamcast
    PS2
    The rest

These are the closest ports, IIRC the Xbox version has some frame rate and lag issues or some other weird oddities, the PS2 version has weaker graphics but is technically closer to the Arcade and DC versions than any other as far as gameplay goes.

Can you clarify what you mean by this?

Sprites are more pixelated and looks a little uglier, there's nothing much more to it than that really, otherwise it's a pretty faithful port. Dreamcast is the preferred port of choice of course though, it's the closest visually as well as gameplay wise, without mentioning running on almost identical hardware to the arcade version.

I own an original copy of the first MvC and it does indeed support VGA on the DC. Both of them do natively.

I've played with some friends the Live Arcade version, a friend told me that Pet Shop was banned in tournaments for the obvious reason that anyone see when he is used.
