    Hey Guys

I have a Commodore Max Machine but I'm having some problems. The system turns on and the game loads up but everything freezes after about 5-10 seconds. Sometimes it freezes while the game name is displayed across the screen, sometimes it goes all the way to the game demo and then freezes there. If I hit F1 I can play a few seconds of the game but it eventually freezes.

Any clues as to what the problem might be? I've tried two different game carts and it's the same with each.

    Thanks!

It should have a linear power supply that has a large cap that smooths the output, however as they are near the transformer they tend to dry out and so the PSU does not give a clean voltage. It is 90% likely to be this as you state that the machine does work otherwise.

The maxx PSU should be easy to open (although it might have funny screw bits), there should be two caps, just replace these with the same (or slightly higher) Uf caps making sure that the rated voltage of them is the same or higher and making sure you solder them in the right way round (the same way as they come out, make the - marking on the PCB so you do not forget). You may find that the equivilent caps are smaller then the originals so bend the legs into place and use heatshrink to protect the legs from shorting. Close up and it should now work fine.

    Thanks for the responses.

I checked the power supply before posting and things seemed to be in order, but things involving electricity are foreign to me. I'll check it again and see if I can find Uf caps and get a general idea of how you're describing the problem and the solution.

uF=microfarad if memory serves. Farads are a measurement of capacitance.

Match the farad rating 1:1 and the voltage either 1:1 or of greater value and you'll be golden.

Where are you based? I am currently in Japan, so if you want to send / give it to me then I can replace the caps for lunch money.
