Is anyone else disappointed by this title? I knew it wasn't going to be the same since it wasn't developed by Remedy, but I didn't think Rockstar could do this badly with it given their track record.

Cliche doesn't begin to describe the gameplay / story. It's as if they took bits from every action / FPS game and put them together to make this game. Here's what their goals checklist must have looked like:

[ ] Nightclub / dance club with a lot of flashing lights and electronic music level
[ ] Rainy boat / scrapyard level with a dock path so blatantly linear, it could only exist in a video game
    [ ] Run down inner-city level
[ ] Have the hero shoot enemies while riding in a helicopter
[ ] Have the hero shoot enemies while riding in a boat
[ ] Have little to no variation in the enemies / vehicles

    ... I could go on for a while, but I won't.

The commentary is beyond annoying with WAY too much hand-holding in telling the player what / where to do/go. I've even gone as far as looking through the settings to disable it, but there's no such option. The attempt at humor is borderline Duke Nukem Forever and, at times, there's almost a Duke-esq inflection in his voice. Graphically, it's mediocre at best. I haven't even seen all of this hyped up Euphoria technology or maybe I have and it's so immeasurable, it's a non-mention. For as quickly as you mow down enemies and are pushed to the next part, it hardly seems like a needed feature. Most of the time the enemies are hiding behind something I don't see anything until the final kill cam which is more annoying than fun... whoo-hoo, I can slow it down and waste more of my time - how exciting.

I also made the mistake of getting the "Special Edition" which, compared to something like the Uncharted 3 special edition, is ABYSMAL. The game is just a standard retail game. It doesn't even say "not for resale" on the back to indicate it's part of a special edition or anything like that. The statue is crap. They must have had a hell of a lighting team for that promo shot because the one I got looks nothing like that. The artwork comes in generic white folder with a Rockstar sticker keeping it closed. There is nothing special about this to warrant an extra $40.

All in all I am very disappointed. I've had it preordered since January and was disappointed when it was delayed, but after finally playing it, it's obvious their delay was just a waste of my time. It was most likely time invested in the multiplayer which I have NO interest in. I played Max Payne 1 and 2 for the story and I expected as much from the 3rd installment.

Hmm, since I have such low expectations of games now, I haven't purchased one on release day since Halo 3.

I love Max Payne, so your short review is pretty sad to hear... My quick question is. How far have you gotten?
And is the story line told the same way comic strip style super pimp? Or did they really butcher it (well I see you mentioning they don't describe the gameplay/story, but don't know your progress or if you mean a incomprehensive beginning intro or something)

Anyway, my friend mentioned to me a bit back saying they were spending a lot of time on the multiplayer aspect, but I don't know where he got that information. I wouldn't doubt it, probably took them awhile to nail a decent enough slow-mo idea.

Generally a new series that has a 3rd usually goes shit. I've seen posters and everything around for this game and it's quite upsetting that this has happened.
I was thinking of buying this game just because the amount of exposure it's had all over buses, trains, stores, TV and what not... Looks like they just spent their time advertising the bloody thing.

I've been reading people's comments on neogaf and they're liking it. I'm more curious because part of the story takes place in São Paulo. But i know there will be lots of cliche and absurd errors / misconceptions.

From what Ive seen they ditched the Comic books style narration and went with the "Man on Fire" style with flashy editing/video effects and words flashing on the screen.

That and the focus on cover turned me off from getting it day 1. Max Payne 2 is my favorite 3rd person shooter, but ill way till this ones cheap.

To be honest I have zero interest in it, I played both on the xbox when they came out. I don't have any desire to go back to it, it was fun for the time but not anything I felt needed a sequel. I feel the same about the Hitman franchise as well.

Disc one must have either been done by the interns at Rockstar or was so poor because they focused on disc two because I enjoyed the last couple of chapters significantly more. The atmosphere was more inline with the Max Payne I remember, especially when you get to take control of the younger Max.

But Max Payne 3 suddenly became something much more exiting to me than a Max Payne 1/2 sequel when he shaved his head and went rogue. It was like playing Walter White from the Breaking Bad AMC series. If Breaking Bad had a video game, this would / should unofficially be it. It's exactly what I'd expect Walter to be like at the end of this last season. He even resembles Walter and sounds a bit like him in his aggressive desperataion.

The game is still pretty much inline with what I wrote above (absurdly linear (if you forget a piece of one of the weapons, forget going back to look for it unless you start the level over), etc), but throughout disc two, the game was visually MUCH better and I started to feel more like I was playing to save a man's life than just waiting for the next cutscene.

Theres huge billboards in southern california advertising this game like its a 100 million dollar movie. It always surprises me when I see a game get that kind of advertising.

Well there's one good thing that came from it, at least now we'll get new info on GTAV. :p

In all seriousness sounds just like any other Max Payne game, run and shoot, run and shoot, run and shoot. First two bored me so I have no desire to play this one, I never expected much from it anyway.
