http://mediaportal.sourceforge.net/ Has anyone used this yet? It supposedly evolved from Xbox Media Center, as it has many of the same features XBMC does. Is it worth my time?
If you're looking for a easy way to play media for the front room on an old pc, I've heard good things about GeeXboX: http://www.geexbox.org/en/ It can play mpeg, vcd, dvd, divx, xvid, rm, wmv, ogm video and mp3, ogg, wav, ac3 audio. Doesn't require anything much hardware-wise, 400mhz p2 is fine. Mediaportal sounds a lot more advanced, though. I'd be interested to see how the schedule recording thing works, sounds like cheap tivo to me.
