so is MK2, for which the controller was released for I think , although u could combine buttons (which was lame)
Mortal Kombat II was fully playable on the 3-button controller and works pretty well actually. Atleast tons better than SF2.

It was probably for backwards compatibility's sake. Incase there was a game made later that for some reason didn't behave properly in 6-button mode maybe. Back in the day I thought it was like a Select button. But you actually hold it down when you turn on the system to force 3 button mode.
One of that games is Golden Axe 2, it goes crazy with the 6 buttons enabled. And if you have a 32x you want a 6 button controller. Not imprescindible but very very useful.
Yes, Golden Axe 2 is one of the games that doesn't like the 6 button pad as is Alien 3. I'm pretty sure that there are more games as well. There's probably a list on the net if you look hard enough. Yakumo
