Hi! I went and bought one of these, with the aim of hooking my MegaCD devkit up to a Dell UltraSharp 15" LCD monitor. My giant blurry widescreen TV isn't so easy on the eyes and is taking up all my desk space! I've wired up a SCART socket as per a post over here: using the pinouts from here: and making sure to wire up every Ground pin. It's not pretty to look at, but I believe it to be correct as per the info above: I get a few seconds of lovely crisp visuals, then back to 'No Signal', on a loop. I think this means the sync is wrong. Could someone knowledgeable please confirm the info I've been following is correct, and point me in the direction of where I might be going wrong? Thank you!
Have you tried using C-Sync instead of Composite Video for Sync? C-Sync is pure sync so it should give a better image. I think it's pin 7 on the DIN connector. You may need to boost the C-Sync signal with an amp or you can buy a pre-made cable with the amp built-in.
Success! I owe you one figurative internet beer, my friend The colours are a little bit darker than I'm used to (can't see in the photo, my phone's camera has colour correction) - I've seen this issue mentioned a few times, any idea what causes it?
You're quite welcome. I had a feeling that the converter didn't like Composite Video. Glad it's working! I'm considering picking up one of these converters myself for a future project. The darkness issue could be a few things. If I had to guess it's either the converter, the C-Sync line needs an amp, or the monitor needs some settings adjusted. Is there a way to adjust the brightness settings on the converter?
Ah, the converter has an on-screen menu with some settings, I think I've solved it. Right, I've proven it works, now to order some high quality shielded cables and redo my awful soldering. Thank you again!
Keep the resistors on the RGB lines. If you remove them, the image will be extremely bright. You need them to keep the image from being too bright. The pinout above is how Sega wired the official cables. Glad to see it's all working fine now! By the way, if you haven't done them already, I recommend the MD region mods. It should be super easy as long as the motherboard isn't one of the dreaded VA7s.
It's a Cross products MegaCD kit, all of that is in the DIP switches. I may region mod some of my spare consoles since I'll need various test machines for my game. I'll try messing with the pots. Also, this has turned into a temporary measure, I may have done some drunk eBaying and bought a Sync Strike! Also an air guitar. One is considerably more useful than the other.
