Hey all, Firstly, I'm new so sorry if this question has been asked before or if it's not relevant or not in the right place! Anyhow, my question is this... Are the different versions of megadrive/Genesis games produced for the same market rarer than others? Let me explain...and here's where I think I'm a little obsessed! I recently bought two PAL Megadrives and each came with Sonic the Hedgehog. Now I noticed differences between the two games. One had a lighter cover than the other and the manual and cart inside where darker in colour to the other. On further investigation one came from Malaysia and one from China... Am I being a little too obsessed or is there some interest in the variations? Are variations due to a change in production venue or is one a copy? Rob
With old games it can probably happen more often than with nowadays games. I assume different coloring can happen from wrongly adjusted printing machines. So if one was printed in Malaysia while the other was printed in China - its very possible they vary. And you're not alone, there are a lot of people collecting variants. I know from another collecting scene (action figures) that variants reach crazy prices there. People go insane over a machine gun being light gray instead of dark gray and so on.. so don't feel too bad about an obsession
Of interesting note, Shadow of the Beast for genesis & PAL Megadrive was an EA game, which is a different to the Japanese conversion which was handled by Victor.
It's great fun finding JAP/US Megadrive games in the UK because the box art is usually so different! These subtle differences in colour or maker etc in region games interests me greatly also....
japanese box art in my view is miles better than the bland uk box art just look at ghouls n ghosts or gunstar heroes
Game variants also happen in modern consoles. It's not wholly unusual to have multiple versions (with later releases correcting minor bugs in prior releases) of software. -hl718
Plus lets not forget that all mega drive games in japan had color manuals(excluding acclaim) better then the photo b&w copy manuals we got.
