I recently decided that I wanted to try and take the risk and try to install a switch for 50/60Hz and possibly Region changing switch because I much prefer playing sonic 2 at it's usual speed and I accidently spent my money on an NTSC version of Sonic Spinball. So I tried looking at many different guides on how to do it and each seem to be somewhat different and i'm not sure which one is the one for me. I am pretty sure that the most suited guide for me is this one and I also pretty sure I got a Revision VA1/1.8 here which is what this guide is suited for. How ever I also found a guide on youtube that add a step other guides never talk about for the model 2 because on the second part of his guide he says that people who uses S-Video (like me) would other wise have black and white on screen and would have to follow his second part in order to fix. basically he installs another switch for the Megadrive's oscillator and a different oscillator he had to switch between the colors and no color. now I just want to know, will following the guide I showed above would end up with everything I need? or will I have to add another oscillator? or maybe the guy was using a different Revision. idk.
If you are in a PAL country, you're better off using RGB SCART for better picture quality and your television/monitor should be able to handle both 50 and 60 Hz fine. However, there's nothing wrong with trying it - you'll just get a black and white picture if your television doesn't like it and then you'll know what to do. The least intrusive mods nowadays are the switchless ones. Bad_Ad84 sells the chips here and you'll find install guides for both the Seb and d4s code versions.
ok, I live in israel and they usually sell PAL stuff here, but we also have 230v connections which i'm not sure if it has anything to do with this but idk. also I found someting interesting, I only right now looked up what is an RGB cable is and by the looks of it I think I got a converter for it that came with my 360, if I connect the S-cable to that converter and connect that to my TV , will that count as RGB? or am I just talking shit right now?
well, lets hope for the best, luckly I wont fuck up and kill my megadrive ok, so I have not started with the mod yet (need to buy a switch first) I decided to look at the comment section at the tutorial I mentioned, and there are 2 things that sparked my interest. right bellow the the tutorial someone showed how they did it their mod and the guy decided to add another 2 resisters to the switch because apparently there is a good chance that there will be a shirt circuit without them (at least that's what I understood) my question is what is the worst that could happen without those resistors because I don't seem to understand very well what he's saying. the second thing is that someone right at the end of the page said he got a problem after cuting the places marked with red , and I am curious if this could happen to me and is this tutorial trust worthy? or maybe the guy forgot to mention something which caused that guy the problem?
If you use a Scart RGB cable you will have colour video. Your TV doesn't need to support NTSC. It needs to support NTSC if you don't have an RGB cable.
yeah, I kind of figured that out already, I was hoping I could find one of those around my house and no luck, I do however found lots of scart connection cables and I found a tutorial to how to make one, however I need another S-video output and the only one I got is from my megadrive's S-video and I rather not touch that, I guess i'll just order one online
That little round plug is not an S-VHS plug. It's a proprietary mega drive plug. These RGB scart cables are really cheap to get. You can get them off of ebay or aliepress for about 6-7 bucks.
Also, you probably couldn't hack up an s-video lead as it's quite likely it won't be fully wired, so the RGB pins won't be connected. Resistors don't stop shorts. It's a pull-up resistor, which you use with logic (or microcontrollers) to stop a floating pin. If the switch In other words, you're ensuring the pin either has Vcc or GND. As was said in the thread, it shouldn't be necessary but could prevent issues.
ok, thank you very much for the answer, I may finally going to try and follow the tutorial today, I already bough the 1k resistors tho and I guess making the wires float is not a good idea, so I just do the resistors thing anyways. if I will go off on doing this can I follow the regular tutorial and then do it as he did in the picture by connecting the ground to the resistors? because I believe he said in one point that in his method I may end up with something like 50HZ JAP. yeah, i'll most likely just order one, it's just that I hate waiting for shipping. EDIT: ok, so I disassambled my MegaDrive, and I noticed something, The board and all the connections and pins, they look so much smaller in reality then they are in the pictures. I am to afraid to make the soldering point at leg 107, I don't want to cause a shirt circuit by accident. I decided to leave this to someone with more expirience with soldering so i'm going to go to an electronic store tomarrow
