There's something that bothers me about that game. everyone says that it only saw release in north america as a sega channel exclusive and yet I clearly remember seeing a boxed copy at a video rental store back when I was a kid. it was in a Genesis box too and not a Mega Drive one.

Could it be that perhaps it was released in video rental stores alongside the Sega Channel release?

Most likely a promo box, empty...nothing else.

It was supposed to have a US release, but was canceled. So maybe it was a "coming soon" type box?

There are also repros out there with the North American branding, though that's a much more recent development.

It never came out. As stated, North American box art was produced and is out there. But production and sale of a North American release never happened. It indeed was only ever seen in America on the Sega Channel. It was released in Europe and Japan ofcourse. I would agree if you saw a box in a store back then it was likely just a promotion type of box. If it had actually been released in any numbers, we would have known about it by now.

This. It was meant for a US release, but Sega paid Capcom for exclusive Sega Channel rights.

The only standalone US ROM that ever existed is a EPROM on a board.

    Retail product never got made.
