According to InsertCredit, quoting Fami - Melty Blood coming to PS2. Now I know this probably did not have many people jumping for joy, but trust me it is a deceptively brilliant fighter. Now whether they will make White Ren etc finally playable is still unconfirmed, but this version knocks the doujin PC release into submission. Kouma, balance and graphics are all great on the arcade so it should be a solid conversion. I really don't see how they could mess it up. For those who want to check it out - try my favourite tokyo ranking fighters for some high level match videos. Don't let the basic graphics put you off, there is a lot of depth here, combos are damn tight and character choice is supreme. This was my absolute game of last year and I still play vs matches against the one other guy in Oxford who likes it, weekly. So please get excited - it is very much worth it. Plus this may start a trend for more dojin games leaping to PS2. Bike Bandits anyone? Or maybe a complete version of tsukihime on ps2? (edited of course) I am so chuffed, I don't even care that it is not coming for the DC. Anything will do! EDIT - Arcade HP - http://e56.info/mbac/index.html TRF - tons of good match vids of AC - http://www.trftrf.com/moviembac.html
It's a little sad that it's coming out on PS2 rather than DC or Xbox as it will likely get buried under a mountain of other mediocre releases. But whatever, I suppose as long as it gets a home release it's all good for Ecole.
Well the more I think about it - the more the PS2 seems like the most appropriate platform. Taking into account that this is a game aimed at the japanese market - the xbox is out. As for the DC - Melty Blood actually has the potential to be quite a big hit. You have to remember that the original PC game still sells for about the same price as a new game - despite being rather old. It is still sold after release, almost undheard of for a dojin game. The original Tsukihime game sells for over 40000 yen, (more than taromaru) it is not even that rare! Also some of the add on discs sell for even more than that. Not to mention the manga was a huge success as was the (mediocre) anime series. This is a big and very popular franchise. When I was in Osaka a rare figure caused a stampede when it went on sale, however it is not only limited to hardcore potential. I recall seeing loads of unlikely people in my local arcade just having a look and a go when there was no-one playing. The anime made it very commercial in japan, as well as this the male doujinshi is everywhere and the female doujinshi has some currency also. It is not quite Shoenen Jump commercial - but it may be too big for the DC... So I do think that this could outsell most of the recent DC release, ecole could well make a hit out of this one. Another crucial factor is that Type-Moon could not be bigger in Japan right now - Fate/Stay is the best selling ero game of all time and everything associated with it causes instant sell outs on release. PS2 will reach the most people in japan- I think it will be the best choice for Ecole and for the game.
I think it's sad people play this game at all. Ugliest pixelation I've seen since the first gen NES game boxes.
Now now, it's not that bad. I actually really enjoy the game art, which is a bit of a paradox. On the one hand, you're right: it is definitely a bit more pixelly than the latest KOF or Guilty Gear installment, but yet the sprites in Melty Blood move with just as much if not more fluidity. Despite the game's visual novel origins and retro graphics, the play system is surprisingly deep, and is really a lot of fun. Warakia, I actually just saw this info on IC a while back and wondered if you had posted anything about it here. ^_^ While it's a little disappointing to not have the game on the Dreamcast, the PS2 does make more sense--it's the dominant console in Japan, which should help in sales numbers for the game. And either way, I'm not too concerned about it--provided the company who's porting the game knows what they're doing, there's no reason why this should look any worse than it would on the Dreamcast. I just hope they know what they doing. With Fate/stay night also making its way to the PS2 in the near future, it will be easier for Type-Moon to gauge the game's success on the more popular platform with higher visibility. Oh, and Warakia: I'm not sure F/sn holds the title of bestselling PC game in Japan anymore. I could have sworn I read recently that something else took the crown. I want to say the PC port of ToHeart2, but that just sounds wrong for some reason.
Whoops, Fate/Hollow A holds the title for fastest selling Pc game. Though F/S N must come second to To Heart 2 X if that has sold more. (I do recall reading it had somewhere) Apologies. As for pixels, well I'm not going to deny the fact the graphics are pretty bad! However I think the animation really makes up for it. Moves like Chaos' standing B or crouching A are just stunningly well done. I almost prefer great animation over high res sprites. Ah well, each to their own. You have to admit - for an amateur production it looks pretty good, that kind of animation only comes from real effort and attention to detail.
Wow! That's awesome. My old roommate used to play this game constantly. It seemed fun enough and am glad to see it coming the console market.
Have you seen it in action? It's bad enough to have low res sprites and high res backgrounds displayed in interlaced mode, a la some of the more recent SNK 2D fighters, but these look like shit to begin with, and appear to be displayed in 31khz. For shame.
I haven't seen Act Cadenza in action, but I've got the first Melty Blood on the PC, and I don't imagine it's changed much, unless something was really borked for the arcade conversion. On the PC, the sprites are pixelly in an endearing way, but the super-smooth movement--I'm talking the love child of Guilty Gear and Street Fighter III on crystal meth--more than makes up for it. If you haven't tried playing it, give it a shot--looks can be deceiving. And not that I'm trying to defend it if it was indeed just a shitty arcade port, but the original game WAS a doujin production, and for it to look and play the way it does is a pretty amazing feat. Warakia: THAT's it, it was Fate/hollow ataraxia. I knew ToHeart2 did well, but I didn't think it beat F/SN, or even Clannad.
AC does not look much different from the Re-act final patched PC edition. In fact it looks better as my crappy PC does not run it in 32bit colour if I want a fluid framerate! So yeah if you are going to be picky, on certain backgrounds the characters do look a little stark against the backgrounds. But not as bad as KOF NW etc. In fact the 3D effects look more intergrated on AC, where as they stand out on the home version in my experience. But I don't want to get bogged down on the graphics too much, they are not great, but that in no way effects the gameplay. I personally think the style, animation and imagination behind the graphics makes up for it, but graphics are a hugely subjective thing - so I can't really argue. What I was thinking about today - while playing Re-act - is tht sony will probably force them to add some hi res backrounds a la KOF, just a thought, as long as there is an option to turn them off I don't care. We might get a remixed OST as well, I personally love certain tracks on the OST, but some are a little stale so that might be a good thing. The best thing I was thinking of, is that they could even bung in a new storyline to the story mode of re-act. Now that would be great.
