Should be fine, it should fall back to the lower speed.

    Computer type Compaq Presario Desktop
    OS XP Media Player
    CPU Pentium4 631 (C) HT 3.0 GHz
RAM 1 gig trying to updrage to 2

Ive upgraded my Pc from 1gig PC2-4200 MB/sec (2 halg gig sticks) to 2gig PC4300 (2 one gig sticks). It will only detect 1gig in the bios. Ive cheanged which stick goes where and its not the ram thats faulty and gone back to two half gig sticks which proves the memory slots are working ok.

    Bit stuck now.
The Compaq website states I can have 2gig installed. Hmmm must be some thing Im overlooking.

Are there any RAM-related BIOS options?

None also no jumper to change

    ITs a ECS RC410-M motherboard.

Have you tried each 1GB stick on their own, do they both show up ok? I'd try running memtest86 on each stick individually to see if one of them is messed up in some way.

Sounds like you got unlucky with the RAM/board combination, to be honest. If you've been through the mobo manual searching for jumper settings and such, though, I guess you'd have come to that conclusion anyway.

This is exaclty why friends dont let friends buy Compac's or ECS boards ;-)
Neither are known for reliability or build quality.

Have you made sure you are using the latest Bios Revision ?

The 2 gig compatability may have come along with an updated Bios.

If it was me I would flash to the latest Bios just so you can rule it out as a possible issue.
