Got a deja vu feeling, anyway... Time for a new card, got too many options and not enough answers. Prices are either too high or too low, no longer can you guess which is genuine and which is a pirate since now even the crappiest ones have packaging in perfect english with "original product" stickers just like the actual original ones. Then theres the new formats: I dont know why but both M2 and miniSD are dirt cheap, going for much less than the bigger versions. There are some nice deals like this one but then again I heard rumors that both M2 and miniSDs are much slower than the bigger cards, specially when using adapters. So, any advice with this?
I dunno. I didn't really shop around. It's probably marked up a bit because of the free shipping or something.
A friend of mine recently bought a memory stick in bestbuy and it was fake, "magic gate:unknown" See the problem?
Basically shop around but keep to companies that have a good rep or buy from the high street from known chains. Only Sony, Sandisk and Lexar make true memory sticks so any other brand is likely to be a cheap copy. If you are going to buy a memory stick then the only choice is the Sandisk Ultra series, they may be more expensive but with a 10mb/s average write speed (the non branded ones might get a few mb/s speed) and at least a 5 year warrenty (and they will honour it, I was given a new unbranded SD card and it lasted 4 months...) it's worth every penny. Every memory stick / SD card I have bought has been Sandisk and I've never had a problem, well I had one and that was due to me forgetting there is a limit to the number of files you can write to the root directory, however Sandisk replaced it no questions asked.
Well, heres your options... A.) you can buy a real ms pro duo ( not a fake cheap one ) which come in 4gb ( $15-$20 ), 8gb ( $25-$50 ) and 16gb ( $90-$120 ) sizes... B.) you can buy a PhotoFast CR-5400 ( ~$6 ) and 2x16gb ( $42 each ) microsd cards for ~$90-$110 Personally I haven't tried the Photofast card ( but I am purchasing one as we speak ) but I can say the quality of the card does matter. In my speed tests for DX64 I found my sandisk cards worked alot better than the offical sony/lexar cards ( by 2-5fps! ) There is another route though, which is if you have a "hacked" psp persay you can use USBHost to stream your movies, music, photos and homebrew over. so you can have a 32mb card but you are then only limited to how much hdd space you have on your computer... but the downside is just that, you have to be near your computer with a usb cable hooked up for that method to work. I hope that helps! Thanks for Everything, PSPdemon
There is a limit to how many files you can dump to the root of an SD card? I was unaware of this, whats the limit? Also why not just zero out the card, you would have been able to skip getting it replaced.
If the card is formatted to FAT16 which will be the default for <=4gb memory cards then you have a 511 file limit (if you use long file names then each file takes 4 file units per file, so 127 files in the root if they are all long filenames), in FAT12 in the floppy days you were limited to 63 files. One file allocation is taken for the root directory. FAT32 has no such problems as it treats the Root directory as a normal directory.
you could also buy one of those Memory Stick to Micro SD adapters. I don't think that it impact performance because its just a rewiring, isn't it?
There isn't much performance difference, however Micro SD to Memory Stick Duo convertors are limited to 2GB cards (not compatable with SDHC cards) and they aren't official so problems could happen... at the end of the day it's better to buy a proper MS Pro Duo card and get one with a decent write speed so it doesn't take time to make and drink a coffee or two to fill it up.
Again, he could use the PhotoFast CR-5400 ( <-- linked to the cheapest one ) which has 2 microsd slots for up to 32gb's of memory ( you can just stick one card in though ) I do not know what kind of performance is on these ( my guess is just a tad bit slower ) however if you are using it for music/videos/photos and some homebrew... then I see no issues with this method.
Weird, I just saw an ad for 2 16GB sandisk microSD cards+MSduo adaptor, the promo said it was for photography but it should work for PSP just fine. All for just a little more than a 8GB Mark2 card.
Photofast CR-5400 Thumbs up!! For all interested in the Photofast CR-5400, I have been running one for about 6 months now with 2 x 16 gb sandisk class 2 in and it runs at just about the same speed as my real Sony 16 gig mark2, also same as my sandisk 8gb. I *highly* recommend them. It allows for so much space... regards, npt :thumbsup::thumbsup:
I bought what I thought was a proper official Sandisk PSP memory card and it ended up being a fake, the card was bad quality and didn't work most of the time. Instead, got an adaptor to fit into the PSP memory slot, that took Micro SD cards; and got a 4Gb card (you can get much larger ones of course), worked very well, fast too; and far cheaper - I think I paid about £7 for the card and adaptor including postage - it worked out a good deal indeed. One other thing - my PSP 3000 refused to work with any battery that wasn't the official Sony one; another issue. Anyway, just sold my PSP as don't use it much anyway these days, so not an issue now.
