After turning on the original xbox it shows only the xbox logo, then the menu is not displayed. It shows a black screen. Any idea about fixing this problem. - Update: My friend, who is responsible for this problem, told me that when he was trying to softmod it (already softmodded) , he deleted some files from the hard drive. Do you think I can fix the problem by myself or it needs a new hard drive? Thanks in advance.
Might be a corrupt dashboard. Xbox has essential OS files on the HDD. One other thing comes to mind. Are you using a component cable on an SDTV? SDTVs don't support 480p, any high def modes need to be disabled for both the menu and games.
Wouldn't a corrupted dashboard end in a frag? I believe the cable theory is the most promising. Do games still run? Especially ones not on this list, if you have any.
on an HDTV. Yes, they do. I tried one not on the list and it worked but I have to power off while the disk on the tray then power on to get it worked.
Yes. I think it is corrupt dashboard because someone tried to softmod it while it is already softmodded.
Seeing as how this happened after attempting to install/update a softmod I would suspect it's just a case of corrupted/missing dashboard or softmod files. If games run on it and the gamesave that was initially used to mod it happens to still be present, you could get ftp access and fix the softmod from a pc. Ask your friend which game he used to softmod it (if he modded it that way at all to begin with). If he left the modded gamesave files on the Xbox, fixing it would actually not be all that complicated. You'd pop in the game he used, then you'd have ftp access to it and copying needed files over to it would be pretty easy. If he either didn't use a gamesave exploit, you can't find which game he used, or he deleted the gamesave from the Xbox, then fixing it gets a little more tedious. At that point you will most likely you'll need to take the hard drive out and hook it up to a PC or a hardmodded Xbox if you or a friend has one. Hopefully you have a backup of your EEPROM or else it makes getting into the hard drive to fix it more complicated. If you DO have a backup of the EEPROM, you can burn XboxHDM 1.9 to a disc and use it in a PC to unlock the hard drive, fix the softmod, then re-lock the hard drive. If you don't have a backup, you can do a hot-swap instead but that does come with a little risk. I used to only do hot-swaps so it's not terribly risky but you can break the hard drive if you do it wrong. Not always. If it gets passed the initial bootup and the softmod just points to a broken XBE or points to an XBE that has a configuration file that's now missing, it could just freeze up at a black screen. It could also be XBMC locking up (if he uses that as a dashboard).
