To celebrate me just getting MGS: Legacy Collection, I wanna know, what is your favorite Metal Gear game? How do you play? What's the hardest difficulty you've ever beaten a MGS game? What's your favorite soundtrack? Lemme know! I love Metal Gear, so I would love to know what other fans think of the game.
I've only ever played the first PlayStation meta gear game and that was on the Dreamcast so I can't really say which was best. However Android users may not know that there are 3 fan made 3D Metal Gear games on the Play Store called Metal Gear Outter Heaven. They're actually very good! The 3rd is the best as the programmer really got in touch with Android OS.
Played them all, loved MGS 3 the best. The execution, story and environment was done brilliantly. My favs in order (of the main games) would be: MGS 3 > 1 > 4 > 2 > Metal Gear - MSX (this only ranks so low because I didn't play it back in the day) Not sure about the direction the series is going, and personally I think he should really put it to rest soon as it's almost turning into another Silent Hill style franchise. I wouldn't rule out remakes if done properly, but yeah they're jumping the shark somewhat nowadays. It still pains me what they did to Silent Hill, oh god it hurts...
I've never played any of them but I picked up the legacy collection on Black Friday. Probably start playing through it sometime next week.
My personal favorites are Metal Gear Solid 1 for bringing in the epic storyline and combining it with the stealth gameplay and MGS Peace Walker by taking the whole franchise to another level with creating your army and researching weapons. MGS 2 tanker chapter gets an honorable mention as well for brilliant design and one of the best video game openings ever.
You know, I really enjoyed Silent Hill, and I'm not even a fan of survival horror. Up until that remake of the first game. I know your feels. But, Im still really curious on whats going to happen to the Metal Gear series in the future. How will Kojima close off the series? Will he ever continue Metal Gear Rising? Find out next time on DRAGON BALL Z! That joke was horrible...
MGS2 is my favorite, always will be, I suppose. I have the original PS2 version. It was the first Metal Gear game I owned (though I'd played a demo for the original MGS years ago). It's where my username came from, after all - although the Patriots are mentioned in other MGS games as well. I also really love Twin Snakes, and the first MGS, and MGS3 to a lesser extent. I liked MGS3, but not as much as I liked the earlier games in the series. I own MGS4, but I'm not too fond of it - it feels like they were trying to imitate Gears of War. I guess I ought to give it another try some day. I own Metal Gear for NES too, but I haven't played it much so I can really comment on it. So yeah, I'm somewhat selective about MGS, but I think MGS2 is a great game. A while back, I made a Flash animation that was inspired by the photo uploader program "designed" by Otacon. My favorite quote from MGS2 (the Colonel): "I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari-Kari rock. I need scissors! 61!" That's really stuck with me over the years.
I remember watching a friend play the original MGS on the Playstation and it completely blew me away. I'd never seen anything like it. Completely over the top characters, cutscenes, stealth, action, weapons, audio, the concrete, steel and icy shades of grey throughout the base. The world issues covered, war, love, technology, mankind even if it was pompous at times, it was all completely new to me within the realm of gaming. Unlocking stealth, the bandana, 'Rookie', Cyborg Ninja, VR Missions, that pesky Russian Hind. I could go on and on. Finally got my own copy (PC CD) for christmas back in 2000. Amazing. Around the same time I was hammering Pokemon blue, Game Boy being my main console aside from PC. Ghost Babel was fantastic for a handheld title, never quite completed it though. Would love to see it on the 3DS Virtual Console, easily one of the best GBC games. Metal Gear Solid 2 is an incredible body of work but for me personally the gameplay wasn't engaging enough. The intro and tanker were glorious but the off shore rig setting was completely devoid of charm and felt tacked on. You could pick it apart forever though and the wave of theoretical analysis that followed in it's wake doesn't happen often enough in the medium. Really enjoyed MGS3, James Bond on acid. A very surreal and stylish game even though it felt a little too clunky at times. Awesome boss battles and the end fight was a sight to behold. MGS4. Oh dear oh dear. Played it for the first time ever earlier this year. I wanted to cherish it. Didn't mind the first few levels, the awesome weapon upgrades and fun additions like the iPod. Drebin and Little Gray were the most hilarious duo I have ever seen in a video game. Kojima disappeared up his own ass with this one though. I found it to be an absolute turd of a game. Whilst very stylish, the cutscenes were too much. The return to Alaska was fan service at it's worst and the characterisation was appalling. Probably the worst pacing and story in modern gaming. The final boss fight was recycled shite too. Peace Walker - Fantastic handheld game, hampered by limited controls. Need to play the improved PS3 version, had an an absolute blast with the PSP version a few years back.
The only ones I've played are MGS 1 and 2 as well as Twin Snakes, and the only ones I've finished are 1 and Twin Snakes. I got the Legacy Collection too, so I'm planning to play the rest, however even from those two games it's obvious the overarching story is laughably bad and convoluted (although it might be totally tongue in cheek, which would redeem it). Edit: Oh yeah, forgot about Metal Gear Rising, which was great, except I ended up skipping the codec scenes since the story was complete nonsense.
Forgot about Twin Snakes, stands alone as a curio but I always implore everyone I know to play the original PS1 Metal Gear Solid instead of the Twin Snakes.
Holy crap, I have exactly the same opinions about all of those games! I even had Pokemon Blue as well. Except I'd be a bit harder on MGS4, especially the rubbish frame rate and the lack of 'proper' MGS gameplay after the second act. The HD version of Peace Walker is great fun (60fps baby!) with the only downside being that you still have to do all those bloody tank bosses to get the proper ending. One thing we MGS fans in the UK should be annoyed about is how absurdly overpriced Ground Zeroes will be over here- £20 for current gen consoles and $20 in the states (£12). How long do you think we'll have to wait until the price gets knocked down that far? If I remember correctly Kojima says it is about two and a half hours long (not sure if that includes the handful of side missions as well).
Will probably dive into Peace Walker HD next month, still slumming it in Dark Souls! In regards to Ground Zeroes, I reckon the price will drop within a month or two. People will probably pick it up not knowing that it is essentially a teaser and trade it in. Really weird way of releasing a game though, I probably won't play it until it gets a GOTY PS4 version with all the content on one disc.
