I am in the process of testing and disposing of a hundred psones (all 1001) I see they are worth nothing ($15 if even) so sadly the ones with bad lasers get the chop chop. I've see metal spindles on some 1001 and plastic on others. Any idea if this is indicative of a switch from Japan to china production? Board was a pu-8 in the system.
Some 1001s had the spindle replaced under warranty from Sony IIRC, those early machines had great audio but sucky construction and reliablity, mine lasted 4 years but was very frustrating to use for the last 18 months. If you're just throwing the bad laser units out, I've got a PSOne laser waiting for a good home.
I don't want to speak for the quality of the part, but I know metal spindle units that suffered DREs inside warranty were fixed with a plastic spindle replacement, in the UK at least (I was living there at the time).
