I just got MGS4 for Christmas, and I've noticed some pretty considerable slowdown in several places. It often seems to dip well below 30fps, though sometimes it seems to be running at 60fps. It's hard to tell exactly, but the bottom line is that it doesn't look very good. Also, I haven't noticed this in any other game I've tried. The system it's running on is a PS3 Slim, so it's possible that could have something to do with it. Any ideas?

Could also Depend on your TV whether it's running in SD or not.

Like MGO for instance is a Framerate mess in SD for some reason.

Also you have to factor in how much shit is constantly going on that affects the Framerate. The amount of stuff happening at times is insane.

And by not looking good you mean the FR right? B/c you'd be insane not to think the game looks fantastic.

Yeah, the graphics look great, the framerate is just crappy. It's running in HD - not sure what resolution. My system is set at 1080p, but when I play that game in particular (MGS4) it doesn't really look like it. Again, hard to tell. I tried a demo of it before and the resolution was 720p - it did the same thing. I should add that it tends to slow down whenever there are a lot of objects on screen.

lol. Well the game offers Native 1080i/p support so I don't see why it should be in 720p. I played through it twice in 1080i .

I think slowdowns probably just show how much what's going on is stressing their Engine. Playing through part of Act 1 again,I notice when there is a lot lot going on it drops a bit but not enough to bother me. I think the slowdown in those parts sort of makes it feel surreal . But that's just me.

It doesn't slow down often on mine, though there are a few points in the game where it does.

Did you download the update? I believe there was a patch a while ago.

I think so, but I'm not sure. Is it supposed to automatically update when you start the game, or do you have to go to some menu in the game to access it?

It should tell you about an update when you start up the game.

Man, I don't get it. I've looked all over the internet and only found a couple references to some slight slowdown during cutscenes, not the huge slowdowns (going at about 15-20fps in some places, it would seem) that I've observed. Is there something wrong with my PS3? I doubt that, seeing as how I haven't seen any slowdown in any other game I've tried. It bothers me to the point that I don't really want to play the game any more.

I also wonder if it could have something to do with the fact that I'm using a PS3 Slim instead of Phat. I haven't found any references to that theory, however.

For those of you who may be interested, I recently talked to Konami's customer support people about this. At first, the person suggested that it could be due to the PS3 doing something in the background with regards to the internet. Then she suggested that I change my MTU value (don't ask me why). Finally, when I told her that I'd done all that and that it hadn't worked, she said that this is just how the game is supposed to be. ??? It seems to me like she didn't really know what she was talking about.

Anyway, I've done a little more research on this and it seems that some people have this issue and some don't. So for people who have played this game - did you experience any bad framerates? What model of PS3 were you using, and what year did you get it? It seems to me that there are two possibilities - either different models yield different framerates for some reason, or the people who are claiming that they experience no problems don't know what they're talking about.

I can confirm that it runs without a hitch on my 40GB PAL PS3, purchased in 2007.

I have a 40GB PS3 with PS2 GPU (emulated EE). It does not slow down as you describe.

Is your PS3 updated to the latest version?

I know that a few PS3 I have have a habit of slowing down to a slow fps rate (so it seems jerky or paused) with the sound playing as normal. However his happens when they get rather hot and the fan sounds like a jumbo jet taking off.

I personally would try to get a replacement PS3.

Why? The Xbox 360 even with the current boardset, still gets more returns then the PS3 ever did...

Taucias: Yes, it's updated to the latest version.

Jamtex: I'm not convinced that it's something wrong with my PS3. I mean, it only does this on 2 games - MGS4 and Time Crisis 4 (the latter not nearly as bad) - and all the other games have perfect framerates. Uncharted 2, for example, has a lot more complex graphics than MGS4 does at many points, but I noticed no slowdown in that game. I guess it's possible that there's something wrong with the whole PS3 Slim line in regards to these games, but I've yet to hear of another person who's played MGS4 on a PS3 Slim.
